MeGregor oo- curred at his residence, Lot 48, on Saturday evening, tinder very melancholy cireum- stances. About seven o'clock the members of his family were astonished on finding him in one eof the farm houses, bleeding from the left arm and totally unconscious. Pr. Beer was sent for and, on arrival, saw that the unfortunate man was past re- covery. The principal arteries were completely severed, the last drops of blood had almost flown, and life was fastebbing. ‘he wound in the arm was made at the elbow with a common jack- knife, whether with the intention of sui- cide or not, is unknown. Mr. McGregor has been for some time in a very low state of mind. A short time ago his son died of sunstroke in Boston. This greatly increas- ed his troubles, which ended so sadly on Saturday. Mr. McGregor leaves a wife and family of twelve children. He was about 60 years of age, and highly respected by all who knew him. ee ao: aa er e ~ a The World's Regatta. The chief subject for consideration at the conterence will be, how best to pro- mote the commerce of the Empire. Some geod may result from the gathering. e@-e— Methodist Conferences. The oarsmen entered in the race are beginning to arrive, and probably they will all be here and in training by the middle or last of next week. Edward Hanlan and Robert Boyd, whe ar- rived to‘day frem New York, were warmly greeted by the local oarsmen, and every- thing was done to make them speedily feel at home. Hanlan brought two boats, one of Toronto make, which he used at Wash- ington, and the other a Waters paper shell. Boyd has a fine boat called the Alexandria, built by Swaddle & Winship. Both of the men lost no time in seeking out their board- ing places in farin houses on the banks of the Seekonk, and trying the course on | which they will seon be called upon to dis- play their utmost skill. They will begin their training at once and keep it up until the day of the race. Hanlan said, after taking a good spiu on the river, that the course was much better than he had been ied to expect, and he was well satisfied with it; in fact, he liked it very much indeed. He proclaimed that he never was in better eondition for a race, and, with a pleasant smile, said that the man who expected to beat him would have to make a faster record than has ever been done yet. Boyd also expressed himself pleased with the course, and stated that he was going to work without delay to reduce his weight, which is somewhat above the mark, and to get himself in good form. He should do his best to win, and meant, if possible, to carry ‘‘ that little pile of money” back toe England. Ross 1s alse here, and was on the river to-day taking a little exercise. G. W. Weisgerber has been at his quarters nearly a week, and daily engages practice. To-day he’ pub- lished a challenge for John A. Kennedy to row a single-scull three mile race at Silver lake on the 26th for $500 a side. til aciicigiilagicciaai attic Science of Hducation— Definitions and Genera! Principles. 1. Education is that perfecting ef the indi vidual which prepares him fer practical usefulness. 2. That system of education is best which prepares the individual fer the high: est and the greatest usefulness. 3. Teaching is developing, instructing, and training mind. 4. Teaching is essential to education. dD. That method of teaching 1s best which best secures the chief ebject of education. 6. The mind can only be preperly de- veloped, instructed, and trained by the proper exercise of its pewers and faculties. 7. In order to the proper exercise of the mental pewers and faculties, suitable ma- terial must be furnished as subject matter for the exercise, and the mind must be properly directed in such exercise. 8. Since the pupil can only furnish a portion of the subject matter suitable fer mental exercise, it is a part of the teacher's work to provide such material. 9. Since the pupil, comparatively unde- veloped, uninstructed and untrained, can- not, unaided, so direct the exercise of his mind in using suitable material as to secure the most beneficial results, it is also a part of the teacher's duty to aid the pupil in securing such results, 10. The proper exercise of the mental powers and faculties upon suitable material will result in useful knowledge, develop- ment, and trainiug. 11. That knowledge, development and training alone, is useful, which contributes to the perfection ef universal being. 12. That culture, knowledge and train- ing is most useful, which secures this ob- ject to the greatest extent. 12, The most useful culture, instruction and training, contribute most largely te the perfection of universal being by securing the highest individual perfection. 14. Hence it is the teacher's imperative duty to secure such culture, and traing to his pupils. —R. A. Waterbury tn the Canada Schwol Journal, St oo IO PINAFORE cigars at Rubin & Hart’s.
