Lab #RANK _ ,..¢~w\ » .. -_ ‘»~ 'A _ ` ';‘ , .'~ `-.ii ¢ As a resident of this fair city and province for five years past,I,find much. to appreciate and admire.Among the features which have impressed me, in common with many others,_are your delightful ,slmllller _-climate, your fertile soil, your successful industries of farming, fishing, stock raising, not omittingfur farming in which I am largely interested; your comfortable and hospitable homes; your admirable and efficient systems of provincial andfcivic, government, So far as my experience and information go, Ido not know of any city, state or province that is orahas beenmore honestly or economically governed. This is saying much for your public men generally. * _ ' I Chiefly, however, in this writing I wish to express my appreciation of one of- your _prominent , public men, the Honorable A. E. ARSENAULT, Premier and Attorney General of this province. Idesire to do this on the time-honored principle of “Honor to whom honor is due.” I feel that it can be ,done without detracting anything from the proper re- gard and respect due to other public men who are pursuing and have pursued a faithful public course, “and there are many such. Nor do Ithink it need he considered invidious thus to call attention to one whom the people of Prince Edward Island themselves have elevated to the highest position within their power to bestow. c if The office of Premier is -an exalt- ed, important and responsible one and has been administered by many able and patriotic men since parliamentary govern- ment was established here one hundred and forty-six years ago. In my humble judgment we have in our present Premier a worthy successor of this long line of distinguished public men. I will give my reasons for this opinion, which reasons will, I trust, appeal to the hearts and minds of all fairminded and thoughtful men and women. ° An acquaintance of five years en- ables me to speak of Premier Arsenault both as a man and as a public officiall As a _man I have found him always courteous, kindly, frank and manly. As an official I have found him habitually attentive to his public duties, _prompt and efficient in the disposal of any busi- ness that was brought to his notice, fully informed in regard to all public matters I ` ' - 1 ~-‘ "r 7” '.\~|r\,|mq|1'-rl>‘»(`\ 'ut' r - ~ r ; , _ . He never bores his audience with an address of needless or tiresome length, and whether in the House or on public platform he is always listened to with pleased attention. The fact that he speaks both the English and French languages with fluency and grace is by no means auseless or trivial accomplishment. It has a high value when 'he goes from time to time to Ottawa to discuss provincial matters _with the various departments of the Federal Govemment. The like ability to speak twolanguages with facility was one possessediby the late Liberal Chieftain, Sir Wilfred Laurier, = and it contributed in large measure to the extension of his influence throughout the Dominion. __ _ I am not a politician, not even a voter, and care nothing for parties. But as a resident, as one possessing consider- able property in this Province and as a taxpayer I am interested to secure honest economical government ' and in the men who make and -administer our laws. And I am moved to express. my conviction that we ought to honor any public man, possessed ;1of more than ordinary abilities, than asa prosecutor. As Attorney tiefiieraliggf who ,gives _ his best mind and his best it is equally _true that he enjoys,-»the_ confidence and respect alike of the Bench and Bar. ~ r' I As the leader of the Government, of his party and of the Legislative_As- sembly when it is injsession; Premier Arsenault exhibits many attractive quali- ties. Such af-man I believe we have in Premier Arsenault. _ I believe that many of my readers will agree ,with what I have written Be that as it jmay, it is open to any? man to express his ~ convictions in the 'public press’ at his own cost and charges. This is a free countryand it is worth something to me in the way of satis- faction to thus tell all the people what I think and feel. ` A *Jin* _ tllV0m.;.‘ . »»¢.\ ~ _ 3; = I I) I 1 .
