On \Vednesday evening, Dec. 19th, a
meeting was held at New Haven, to con-
sider the construction of hi new bridge
across North River. V
Mr. Ewen McMillan, Jr., was appointed
to the chair, and carried out his duties in
an very efficient manner.
The first speaker. Mr. Bain, of North
River, pointed out that ii. niaw bridge was
necessary, as the old one isi on the verge
of collapse, He showed how the people
on the north side of the Province were
benefited by the rai1way~-a work of
no practical advantage wha ever, to those
on the Southern Side. ll/Xoreover, Mr.
Bain claimed "that the people on the
southern side are frilly entitled to the
Bridge," as nothing in thel shape of an
important public work h ld been given
them. He also gave impor%.ant inforrna~
tion relating to its construe ion, location
etc. As regards the lochtion of the
bridge, by far the greater number inter-
ested are in favour of having it construct-
ed near the mouth of the niver_ By this
means the road to the cilty would be
shortened by over three milels.
The subject was also discussed by
Messrs. Howard, Mr. Dockendorlf, Mr. H.
McMillan, Mr. Jas. \Vynnd, Mr. P. Mc-
Mann and Mr. H. Crosby.

Shutt should be of interest at the present
juncture. “The time may come when
the growing of sugar beet will be the
chief agricultural pursuit in a large
portion of Canada. It isfsaidfthat in the
United States after many years experi-
menting, beet sugar manufacturers, since
1896, have beenable to compete with those
who produce sugar from the cane. This
is so encouraging to Canadians that
Prince Edward Island, where the soil and
climate is not better adapted than any-
thc establishmcntof at least one isstrong.
A factory could not be supported unless
many acres of beets were cultivated
annually. Before commencing, therefore,
the co-operation of a wide range of
farmers must be secured, and it is said
that during the past few ruonths the
farmers of Prince county have been con-
sidering the matter favorably. It would
menu a departure from the present farln~
ingroutiue. but reliable authorities have
stated that stock raising would be in no
way checked, as the pu.p from the factor-
ies makes excellent feed. The portion of
the beet which is crystallized into sugar,
is no drain on the fertility of the soil. ‘
Ontario produces an excellent sugar
beet yielding more bushels per acre and
possessinga larger per centage of sugar
than the American beet. The State
