For years there was an enormous consumption of horse il8Sl1 in the street-car sysems of the United States and Canada. This was in addi- tion to the number required for_ 01'- dinary purposes of trucking, hauling, railway construction, etc. In those days our Island horse- breeders found. ready sale at good prices for all the heavy team 110008 they could raise and thousands of them were shipped t0 tho Ulllfbd *States and the Canadian mainland. But quite suddenly electric care were substituted for horses ‘on were needed for that purpose. Not only were no more horses needed fpr the cars, but thousands that were in use there were released and turned upon the market for other uses. The price of draught horses went down with a slump, and our Island breeders found themselves with unsalable stock on hand. It was quite natural that the rais- ing of heavy horses should have fallen off under these conditions and that horsebreeders should turn their atten- tion, as they did to other lines, not- ably to the carriage horse and trot- ling stock. But what happened here had happened elsewhere, as well. The draught horse was no longer produced and though not so many are needed as in the days of horse-cars, still it turns out- that there is now an in- suflicient supply. Hence the item which appeared in yesterday’s GUAR- DIAN stating that a well-known Char- lottetown horse dealer has gone to Montreal for a lot of heavy horses, because °‘horses of that class are not now found on the Island.” There is a hint in this for our horse- breeders. The supply of heavy horses has fallen below the needs of the country and there is a growing demand for that class of stock. Those who act promptly may be in time to realise when thc market is at its best. Those who delay for a year or two may be just in time to find the market again over-supplied. _ Since Hon. Mr. Mills’ speech on the redistribution bill has been pub- lished many of the objectors have lapsed into silence. Among other things Mr. Mills said: "We propose to put an end to the gerrymandering system. We say that you shall pay regard to county bounda- ries, that tnese shall' not be broken, that, where a county is entltledto more than one representative, you may divide it into two divisions. If entitled to more than two, into three ridings, but you must make our electoral division with- simply following the ancient traditions of the United Kingdom. Hon. gentli- men will remember that in the United _ Kingdom there is no such thing as coi- siitueneies made up of fragments if different counties. You have the bor- ough divisions and you have the county of a single county It does not form a presentation ot the county have been preseived and it has exercised, as stated by Mr.Gla
