We find ourselves prepared all our lives to obey many different people. We learn as children to how rawcn-rr harmony color do first what our Parents on us. later what our teachers tell us; (my 316 we learn that we must obey the police, but at the same time that other people must obey the police- man when he protects us while we crou the street. As we grow older, we some- how find authority less sacred, but we still acknowledge its necessity when we obey various civil oi- ilcials who tell us things we can do and cannot do, and what taxu must be paid to maintain public services. It is on this change in our attitude to authority that I would like to relect a little today. The readlest example of our changing feeling is, perhaps. that - of the policeman. Children have great respect for policemen. and confidence in them. When a policeman takes a child's hand crossing the street the child is full of pride at the tower of strength beside him. The same thing is true of the teachers of small children. There seems to be something sacred about their authority. INFLUENCED BY ELDERS But as children grow older, even before they are all grown up, they begin to lose this respect for police- men and teachers. This happens partly, of course, because they no longer live in the special, innocent world of youth; but it is by no means just a matter of losing the illusions of childhood in the face of reality. It is not from reality that children get their ideas as they grow up but from their elders, and because most of their m.....sm.....m..m.m. ter, 7 lbs. 13 cu. But if responsibility is taken away from authority, leaving only power, then all reason for author- ity itself is gone. If we forget, :- if our rulers forget, that responsl' ility is part of authority. we will soon be obeying only because we have to, and sometimes we or others will begin to wonder why we even have to obey. Children do not have to make this distinction: they know in- stinctively tbat the policeman or the teacher has both power and responsibility. bnd it is because of this that they have respect and reverence for them. The police- man has just as much responsibil- ity ln the case of the adult, and is just as deserving of respect. BASIC MISTAKE Because authority touches sol many different aspects of our life, a basic mistake like this one, de- priving it of part of its character, and turning it frzm something respected and willingly obeyed to something accepted only because it is imposed with force, can have ire ” -" consequenc It must be one of the clearest illus- trations of how srmething that we simply think-without touch- ing what we actually do-can . have far-reaching effects on our L lives. Uuwilling obedience naturally creates irritation. it is very dif- ficult for a policeman who is con- stantly treated as an unpleasant necessity. to continue to treat people with respect. Those who are in authority, as well as those under it, can forget that responsi- bility is an essential companion to their power. We certainly ought to be grateful, and we ought to the show our gratitude, wherever we demned, and must now be rebuilt.
