Bertrand. acting Minister of Agriculture. has author'- lized the Agricultural Price; Support Board to release the following statement concerning the Govern- inent's Purchases of butter. _The Dominion Bureau of Statis- tics has recently reported that butter storage stocks in Canada amounted to 56.6 million pounds on August l. Of this total the Dairy PrOdilCt! B06111 holding; amounted to 41 million pounds. Although croamery butter stocks this year are slightly higher than- tiiose of a year ago. they are in line with avaragaholdings of the last five years. Last year's storage stocks at Almlst. l amounted to 4-5 million pounds. while the five-year average was 54.8 million pounds. The accumulation of stocks 01f meamery butteir at this season of the year. On the other hand. two- thirds of the butter made in Canada is produced during the months o! May to September. Since production cutruns consump- tion in these months. it is neces- sary to store surplus production in order that butter may be available to meet the deficiency which always- occura in the winter months. The only abnormal feature of present butter stocks in Canada ll that they are largely held by the dairy industry and the trade. The Government stocks of butter have been acquired through the oper- tion of the floor price program. Butter so purchased by the Gov- ernment i; widely distributed in cold storage plants across Canada and will be available for sale when current production falls below demand. Butter held by the Board wu purchased in clrload lots on the basis of ca‘ cents Montreal and Toronto, 50 cents Charlottetown. Halifax and Saint John, 5'7 112 cents Vancouver. It is the intention of tho Government to sell this butter in car-load Jots as purchased but regraded out of storage. The sell- ing price during the present support period, which ends 0n| March 3i, i950. will not be less Britain Alarmed _ Over Big losses From Bovine TB ~ By Don Gilbert Canadian Press Staff Writer IDNDON, Aug. fl —(CP) —-’ While Britons got along on a ration of three pints a week. 200.610.0011 gnllorm of milk is lost every you through daily cattle discus. The dairy industry's lethargy in tackling the scourge of bovine tub- erculosis and other disease is estim- ated to cost British farmers £80.- 000.000 i$120.000.000) a year. Although an attested hard lcheme has been in operation fo: many years. only 18 per cent of British dairy animals have been certified free of tuberculosis. The poor showing has brought demands for an intensified effort to prevent food losses u a result of anfirnal disease. Not only is the dairy situation bad. but huge amounts of carcass meat. and poultry are lost because of in- factions and infestations. Denmark has given the lead in Europe in the fight against bovine tuberculosis. with 99 per cent of her dairy cattle attested free of the disease. In Britain. lack of financial inducement is cited as a reason why farmers donlt take the trouble to have their herds tested. Cost AFnctm ‘fuberculin-iested milk at present. brings a premium of fourpence (seven cents) a gallon over the regular price. but to qualify for this farmers must be up to da-te in farm buildings and dairy equip- ment. And many dalrymen say they have no money for "cow palaces.“ So far Scotland has made the best showing in Britain. with 37.8 per cent for her dairy cows in at- tested herds. Wales follows with m6 per cent, England lagging with only 12 per cent certified free of disease. The Ministry’ of Agriculture has been talking of a "comprehensive eradication schrme." but although it is several years since the pro- ject was broached nothing has come of it. If a national scheme does come, it is believed it will start with the establishment of "clean" areas. af- ter the paitern of Canada's "ro- atricted area" plan. Movement iii- tc these “clcan" ‘areas of non-ai- tested cattle would be prohibited and animals inside the area react.- irig to the tuberculin test would be slaughtered. GLEN VALLEY W.I.
