MONTREAL, Oct. 31- The Roman Catholic Church of St. Irene at the corner of Workman Street and At- Watei- Avenue, was totally destroyed by fire late this afternoon, the dam- age being estimated at $100,000. Five hundred children from the parochial school were in the church when the Sire broke out, and it was only the cool manner in which the Reverend Sisters and the priests led them out that prevented 3 dreadful calamity. As it was the roof of the Church fell iii with a tremendous crash only ‘ive minutes sfter the last of the lit- tle ones had been led to safety. The fire started as far as can be learned ;n thb basement, but just how cannot be 1enrncd._1t spread with startling rapidity, the hangings and decora tions feeding the flames and enabling them to gain great headway. - The firemen were early on the scene but could not save the Church. nor the adjoining Presbytery, and had the greatest difficulty in preventing the flames from consuming the hous- es in the vicinity. ' It was not until ia late hour this evening that thc blaze was finally quelled. As far as can be ascertained there was no loss of life. This is thc second catastrophe to ovcrtnke the Catholic churches in this city recent,- ly, St. John Baptiste Church on Rac- hael Street linving beendestroyed by fire i-ifter being struck by lightning this summer.
