Knwlish railroads, althouch of necessity comparatively shert, do an enormous business. In ao vddress on the business of the Londen and Nor! })- Western arilroad, which recently appeared some figures ure given whose holds as well as Vast magnitude attracts the attention of every reader. This immonse corporation now has a capital of about $550 000,000, which is rather more than thatot the entire south-western group of railroads in the Uuited States, although these lines have nearly ten times as many miles 0% track. Ihe annual income of the great British highway of traffic is over $50,000,000. “The ditfereat work require an army 60,000 strong Sixteen hundred of them are engaged in building locomotives. This great road, with all its branches, only makes up 2,500 miles in length; but it passes through more densely populated than any other on earth, excepting Belgium and some of the smaller tropica! islands. Every year it carries 60,000,000 passengers and 33,000,000 tons of freight. Io the despatch of the enormous business the company employs 3,000 engines, and collectively they cover over 54,000,000 miles every year. By bringiog this rate of distance down tine we find that it meaas 150,000 miles a day, 6,218 miles an hour, and 104 miles minute. §By addiog together the space covered by the engines in four hours, we see that they go far enough to cir- departme nts of its a country cumnavigate the globe, One of the 3,000 | locomotives gives out every five days, and anew one must beready to take its place. These statements are wonder- ful, no matterhow we cossider them; but when we observe that they picture the annual work of one company only, sixty years after the first successful railway began operations, they are pec- uliariy suggestive. If this great ad- vance has beea accomplished since 1827, what miy not be done in the sixty years to come! Perhaps before that period is eaded the methods of land and water CoOmmusications will be eatirely revolutionized, and steam will be succeeded by a torce that ,will cause a grevier change than has taken place dur ing the last century. a B rother Gardner Thinks. GROANING ABOUT THE WICKEDNESS ‘ MANKIND I4 TIME WASTED, —_— — THAT ‘D> ole man Peters war’ ober to my cabin las’ nite,” said Brother Gardner as the la np Was tut ned up for business, “ffe sot and sot, an’ his complaint was dathe had lost all confidence in human noatur.
