THE TUB. butter trade with the United Kingdom is the success of against the old-fashioned tub. one after the other, and uscomely comes in that Canadian butter all round would real- ize from one to two cents per poun 1 packed in koxes; acd we say this as the largest im- ain, and after excensive 5 More New Goods. 20 UASES Expected Next Week, Balance of our spring stock of London Goods. - Capes, Flowers, Straw Goods, Laces, Hats, | | Millinery, ete, | j | The People’s Store. } ! W. A. Weeks & Co. Wholesale & Retail. } Charlottetown, April 11, 1896. ' - =——— my oe arn } i Features of the Butter Trade as Set Forth by the Canadian Gazette. One noteworthy feature of the Canadian 5 : the success of the revolt Merchants, in England and Scot- land, have objected to the tub, with its waste look, and have welcomed the 56-lb. boxes iv which the creamery butter is now coming to hand. The but from Australia and New Zealand in 56-lb. square boxes, and it would be well if all Canadian producers | followed suit. “We are convinced,” writes one large West of England firm, ter porters of Canadian butter in Great Brit- inquiries during the past two years.” “Tbe sooner the old tubs are finally abolished the better,” savs a Glasgow merchant; “during the scarcity choicest Canadian creamery in boxes fetched as bigh as 140s. per 12 lbs.” This revolt against the tub is typical of the gen- eral revolt against inferior butter. Happily the past year saw a most welcome im- provement in the general quality of Can- adian butters sent to this country, and importers do not fail to speak appreciat- ively of the good sense dictatng recent € pments associated with the name of ’rofessor Robertson, the Dominion Dairy ‘ommissioner. “The quality,” says a arge Glasgow firm, “thas been an improve- eut on anything received of late years, and while flavor has not been so delicate ind attractive as fisest Danish, yet it must be acknowledged that the Cana dian butter has been, on the whole, a creditable production. This is the general tone of che reports from merchants. The Canadian butter is distinctly improving, but it is stil] behind Danish, Australian, or the best French butter. Note, for in stance, this report from Bristol :- -“The principal faults are either the butier is too salt, or there is too much moisture left in, and the butter has not been shipped soon enough, and consequently gets stale. Can adian butter makers must find means io get rid of the large amount cf whey that still remains in the butter. This, of course, goes sonr, and the flavor of the iulier is thereby spoilt. Then it ought not to be difficult to use only euffi- cient salt, and that of the right grade, to ensure it keeping a reasonable time.” “Make the butter milder,” says a London pouse—‘that is, less salted; and it will “uit the London market admirably.” Others speak of the desirability cf more refrigerator facilities here and on the other side of the Atlantic. That need is, we believe, being met, and in it, as in other respects, Cavada may pick up some useful wrinkles from Australasia. a FO i ‘ ] i ? Mr. McKinnon asked the Loader of the Government what steps had been taken since the plebiscite on Prohibition in 1893 to ascertain whether this Province can pass a Prohibition law, and if it is the in- tention of the Government to introduce any legislation to prevent drunkenness. Hon. Mr. Peters said that since the vote on the plebiscite question was taken the matter was referred to the Supreme Court of Canada by agreement between, the Doin- inion Government and the Province of Ontario and a series of questions presented for the opinion of the court. The temper- ance people were represented by eminent counsel in the Province of Ontario and the Dominion Government had leading counsel argue the various phases of the question. The Snpreme Court decided the various questions. dut their decision was ajealed from to the Privy Council. Judgment is not yet given. Untilgthis is done, and the powers of the Provincial and Federal Governments distinetly ascer- tained, it would be useless to legislate on this important subject. Regarding legisla- tion to prevent drunkenness, the leader of the Governrent replied that if Mr. Me- Kionon would draw up an act to accom- plish this the Government would give it support. : : Hon.
