Bennett, Prime Minister. representative of the fin- ancial institutions interested in the Beauhamois Company and Qthqzg, were parties to the’ conference. Pre- mier Toschcresu is also being con- sulted and will go to Ottawa. in the early part of next week. "The gov- ernment takes the position strongly that in view of the recent disclos- ures in Parliament, the company must set its house in order in such a way as to satisfy public opinion. Reorganisation Proposed "The Star learned todsy that a - fairly completed reorganization of the company is proposed. There will be some voluntary retirements. The government, while anxious that the undertaking should go ahoad, is understood to have no intuition of embarking on the Question of pub- lic ownership, rather it would prefer the principle now bslngfcllowsd, but 1t is insistent that changes 1n the personnel and possibly in oth- er directions be lnadc. "Under the legislation at the recent session of parliament. the powers conferred upon tho gc-v- ernment are very wide, and failure to comply with tbs stipulations which are being made, might oven invite the process of liquidation. however, no such extreme action is looked for. lmpolliht Conference "Great importance attaches to the conference between Messrs. Bonllott and Taschereau at Ottawa next week. It will have an important bearing on the future of Boouhs-r- nois. It is expected that the coin- ing conference with Premier Tos- chereau apart from dealing with the reorganisation of the company, will relate also to the proposed lease by the Province of an extra 300,000 cu- to the company and consider stops to clear up the obscurity which pro- vails as to the real ownership of the power in question. At present truck drivers are com- peting wlth each other, carrying goods for less than cost. They are overloading their trucks, breaking up the roads, and if the goods are damaged, they cannot pay for them. Messrs. McKinnon and Clarkln further stated that many of the men operating motor trucks were doing so because of no other em- ployment and had no experience in cost accounting. It was these trucks which cut down the less than car load freight by 50%. For example they are carrying goods to Rustieo at the rate of $2.00 per ton. At this rate no profit can be expected if the upkeep of the truck is to be considered- 12 PAGES : the Lieutenant quite up to the standard of former years.
