Canadian Press staff Writer OTTAWA (CF)-Canada's con- sulller price index, barometer of ining costs. rose more sharply in last: than at any time since thel 1950-51 Korean war period. The index. based on 1949 prices ,qugiiing 100.1ose from 116.4 in Jgnujry to a record 120.3 in,0c- iober. an increase of 3.1 points. Government officials say pres- ent information indicates that the index will not fluctuate much for the balance of the year. They ex- pecl. only a small rise or fall in the November index when it is made public early in January. The December ihdex will not be gvaillble until the first week of l'ebruI!')'- 1 An official of the Bureau of statistics said there was little or no change in November in the prices of goods and s vices used in computing the ind it. FASTER CLIMB The increase in the January- fIf'I.0I)el' period of 3.7 points was .substantial compared with the previous three years. Last year the index in the 10-month period rose .6 points from 116.3 to 116.9. In 1954. the rise was .9 points. and in 1953 it was .3 points. However. the :.1 rise was con- siderably less than the Increases in 1950 and 151 during the inna- innary period caused by the Kor- isn conflict. in the corresponding lo-month IN MEMORIAMI FRED DUNSFORD For one who loved life and lived: it as wholeheartedly as he did.' the sudden passing of Frederick Dunsford. MESSAGES OF SYMPATIIY period in 1950 the Index rose 0.4 points to 106.6. For the full year the increase was 7.5 points. The index in 1951 rose nine points in the January - October period and 9.6 points for the full year. to 118.2. MAIN FACTOR Spirallingi food prices mainly were responsible for the the index this year. Price boosts for new passenger cars. liquor. fuel. household appliances and various services. such as haircuts. also contributed to the upward movemen The f sub-index rose sharply from 109.9 in January to 117.9 in October. most of the rise coming in the June-October period. While the over-all index moved upward steeply in 1956. the av- erage weekly wage paid in Can- ada rose from 860. in January to 564.94 in September. However. the rise in living costs was one reason the Bank of Canada boosted its Interest rate on loans to chartered hanks. This is considered an anti-inflationary ' l licences and medical and denial fees. There was no change int April as decreases in food and household operation costs counter- balanced slight increases for shel- ter. clothing and other commodi- ties and services. But in May food prices Jumped sharply. moving the index up 1.2 In points to 111.11. It was the highest monthly rise in five years and caught federal price experts by sugprlse. The food sub - index In ved up an unusual 3.2 points to 112.5. There was a further big jump in food prices in June. particu-i creased to 118.5. breaking thep larly for potatoes. The index in-i previous record of 118.2 set in December. 1951. - It climbed to another peak of 119.1 in July. again as a result oft higher food prices. But it easedi in August to 119 following a mild decline in the price of foods. 4 The trend was reversed in Scp-i tember due to a near across-the-3 board increases in prices. t-spe-. ciaily for foods. The index rose tot move. The year started with lower food prices pushing down the in- dex from 116.8 in December. 1955. to 116.4 in January. Food prices continued to decline In February offsetting other price increases and keeping the index at 116 4. In March the index crept up to li6.6 points following price rises for some foods. rent. automobile ll new high of 119.8. caused; mainly by a l.6-per-cent boost in the food sub-index. It was the same story in no- tober-another Jump in the index to a record 120.3. Higher food prices influenced the upward movement but the October rise citiefly was the result of higher prices for new 1957 passenger cars and liquor. Cornwall. . I too. N. I.
