Melville Presbyterian Church, west- mount, last night, when preaching, to his congregation on "Religion versus Science: How shall we in‘ terpret and use the discoveries oir Science?" he scored thoughtless and; one-sided exponents oi the Darwini- | an theory, condemned the stress? laid today on psychologoy and psycho-analysis, and hailed as all forceful the fact that the universe was God, therefore could only be explained in the light of God's Word. The battle between the science and. rellgion—ii such a battle existed-l brought to the fore singular truths about both scientific research and achievements and religion, Mr. Mulligan noted. One was that, while science sought out the myst- eries oi the universe, sought to ex- plain the universe and the man in the light of material and physical construction, religion had already explained the universe and man in the light of God who was the universe and man in the light of God who was the universe. Man, life made his company sought by all. The funeral which was largely at- ' tended, was held at the Sacred Heart ’ church, Alberton, oh February 14th. The pail bearers were nephews of the deceased. After Requiem Mass was sling by the pastor, Rev. T. Campbell, the remains were tenderly laid to rest in the family plot. He leaves to mourn three sons, Harry, of Alberton, Ansiem and James of Eimsdaie, also four daughters, Mrs. James Redmond. of Alberton, Sister Bertille, StpPaul, Minnesota, Mrs. Peter Foley, East Orange, New Jersey, and Mrs. Doctor Smith, or Brcokiine, Mass. The es- teem in which Mr. O'Brien was held in Eimsdale and the surrounding dis- tricts was tcstified byothe number who visited the home and the large con- course to the church, for the weather was unfit as well as the roads being in bad shape. Death was due to heart failure fol- lowing a. serious operation. The deceased was the daughter of work at its‘ laboratory test-tubes and‘ miscroscopes, but could not discover God. It would discover material matte , but could not spiritual matter of which the universe was founded. "As if the mind was all?” the mind is physical, but it is more than that. The fact that we think brings us into the realm oi the spiritual." Scientists, by their relentless hues- tioning, cannot escape the one ques- tion of import, that if the initial and ultimate cause of the universe, he continued. Whether they like it or not, the question of this initial cause must be met, and here the philoso- pher entered the scene, coming into his own as the man who asks the meaning of the world and of human life. Herc spiritual principles ex- plained material things, here the fact that science was a part of life, religion all of it, was brought out. Sir James Jeans, in his "The Mysterious Universe," liad concluded with the thought that everything he had put forward was “frankly speculative and uncertain," and that all was "beyond the reach of science l religion. Then, within religion and philosophy they will feel. as have all great minds the purpose oi God in one's own life.
