St Fae a ene a tO ta ncn A Chapter on Potato-Planting and Culture. At this eeason of the year we otfer the following suggestions and experi- | ments in potato « ulture: Jesse L. Delano, of Massachussetts, U.S. by planting 18 lbs. of seed, one eve to the hill, had 16 bushels potatoes ; by planting 30 Ibs. of seed, ‘ arth two eves to the hill, 25 bushels.; 46 Ibs, | four eyes to the hall, 30) bushels ; 60 ibs. half of a potato to the bill. 24 bushels, | It will thus be seen that the best results were obtained from planting one eye to the hill, and there being a greater yield of weight et seed, there were fewer pota— toes inthe one hill plot, than in the hers S. E. Smith, Vermont, writes: —“My first parchase of early rose was four quarts. 1 was advised, in order to get the largest yield from the seed, to cut up and leave but one eye to a piece and drop one piece in each hill. The advice was followed, and I will now say that the crop has never been excelled in size of tuber o | from the same number of hills. Others have testified to the same truth, but still persist in using more seed than is needtul. rule now is, two eyes in each hill, hills not over fifteen inches apart, and Ido not see “ny reason tochange the prac tice.” A.T. Lane, Ontario County, N. Y. writes: —"I give my experience for the past four years in reference to sizeof potato seed. First year, large poiatoes cut totwo eyesina piece, and one piece ina hiil, result,a yield of 160 bushels good-sized market potatoes to the acre, with but view small ones. Second year, the same kind of seeding, with similar return. 1 was not satistied with this yield, so the third year seleeted all medium sized potatoes cui off and discarded the seed end, cut the remainder once in two, and planted one be sides ’ Ue in weight piece ina hill. Result, 150 bushels of time market potatoes, with but six bushels of smal] ones per acre. Last season I planted the same asin 1881, and the yield was fully equal to that year. —<—>-_ —_-- Words of Encouragement. FROM A SERMON BY THE REV. 7. DEWITT TALMAGE. Escourage newspaper men. If you knew how many annoyances they have ; if you understood that their most elabo- rate article is sometimes flung oui because there is such great pressure on the columns, and that an accurate utterance be so indistinct the discourse is one long stenographic guess; and that the midnight which finds you asleep demands that they be awake, and that they are sometimes ground between the wheels of our great brain manufactures, sickened at the often approach of men who want complimentary newspaper notices, or who want a retraction; one day sent to report a puglistic encounter; shifted from place to place by sudden revolution, which is liable to take place apy in our great journalistic establish ments, percarious life becoming more and more percarious—if you under- stood it, you would be more and more sympathetic. Aftfable when you have notan axeto be sharpeved on their grindstone, Discuss in your mind what the nineteenth century would be with- out the newspaper, and give eacourag- ing words to all who are engaged in this interest, from the chief of the editorial department down to the boy that throws the morning cr evening news- paper into your basement window, > London Advertiser: We observe that Mr. Maeoun says that sheltered places in the Northwest are subject to early frosts. The whole secret of early frosts is presence of moisture at no great distance from the surface. Land with watery sub-soil is always frosty. On this continent summer frosts have been knewn to extend as far south as the Gulf States. Where the land is thoroughly drained there can be no summer frosts. But where the land is a cold springy sub-soil the heat of the sun makes no impression beyond the surface, and the little heat that is accumulated during the day will on a clear night be given off by radiation long before the night is wholly gone, and the tempersture of the surface rapidly falls to the freezing point. It is no uncemmoen thing to see fields of grain in which all the wet places have been eut off by frost, while the drier portions of the field are unharmed. We know of districts which wereat one time anually subject tosummer frosts where summer frosts are now wholly unknown. The Boston Globe has a word to say for Newfoundland. The island, it says, hasa great future before it, in the Opinien of an English traveller. Con- trary to the general opinion, the climate is salubrious. Its fisheries yield $4,500,- 000 a year, and its mines preduce 45,000 tons of copper annually. In- cluding the inhabitants of the coast of Labrador, its present population is now 190,000, of which 50,000 are engaged in the fisheries. In the interior of the island are large tracts of farming lands to the extent of 2,300,000 acres. which can be purchased by settlers at 30 cents an acre. Its distance from Va- lentia, in Ireland, is only 1,640 miles, and he belicves it will before many years become thickly populated by settlers from the British Isles, potatoes toa given | exibimettraiien Novice. -All Horse snd Carriage Tax and | Dog Tax, for year 188, unpaid by ist June, | will be sued for without respect of persons, Fraxcts S. The following are a few testimonials from a list of several hundred :— The capacity of the Stove is surprising. With a No. 8 Stove we cooked for a party of seven, giving them broiled oysters, steak, lamb chops, and baked biscuit, in 45 minutes, at a costs for gas of 4) cents, On another occasion we gave a dinner in courses of twenty men, the bill of fare as follows : Broiled shad, beef steak, roast quarter of lamb, baked biscuit and coffee; heating the water for washing the dishes tour times, re-setting the table three times. All was accomplished in one hour and forty minutes, at an expense for gas of eleven cents. This work was all done on one No. 8 tove. All were euthusiastic over the manner in Which the oysters, fish and meats were cooked ; none had experienced any so tender, juicy, and of such full flavor before. We consider the stove a great success, and most complete in all its parts and arrangements A. ©. Woop, Supt. I bought one of your No. 12 Gas Cooking Stoves last September, for use in my restau- rant, and have used it ever since for baking, broiling and stewing. 1 can say for it that it is always ready and does its werk rapidly; that there is no dust, no dirt, no surplus heat, as we are using only that portion that we need, and as soon as the article is cooked the gas is extinguished and there is no waste. I think it will do the same amount of work at less cost than coal, even at the high price of gas. It takes much less room than a coal range that would do the same work. J am perfectly satisfied with it and would not be without one for double the price. J. T. Harker. | The Gas Stove you sent me, I am glad to | say has proved an entire suceess. If my testimony is of any value to you, you are at liberty to use it. ‘She decrease in the coal bill more than offsets the increase in the gas ditto. The cooking is excellent ard uni- form in its operation. No dirt or dust irritates the careful house- wife, amd Mrs. 8. describes it as a “real treasure.” In my humble opinion, any man who really wants to add to the number of allotted days of his bettershalf, had better invest in a Gas Stove and save her worry, and himself ex- pense, W. H. Sxymovr. We are perfectly delighted with our Gas Stove. It gives entire satisfaction in every respect. Mrs. M. Pexntxcron, 2103 Vine St. Your favor of the Ist inst. was duly received askin: my opinion of the Gas Cooking Stove bough: last May, and in reply, would state that the satisfaction rendered by the stove was far beyond my expectations, and the work it will accomplish is marvelous, together with the small expense and comfort attending the same. Epwis A. Garert. Having used one of your No. 7 Gas Cooking Stoves for a considerable time past, it is with pleasure that I bear testimony to its genuine merits. It boils, bakes, broils, roasts, and in fact, does everything thata first class stove or range ean do, and with a saving of time and labor, that can only be appreciated by those who use them. It has given us the most entire satisfaction, and to use my wife’s words, ‘‘I would not be without it fur ten times the cost.” From statements of our gas meter taken, we find it more economical than coal.
