An Ottawa dispatch to the Halifax Heraid says that seme vague rumors have been ‘loating about that city for the last day or tive pointing to trouble among the Indians at Brattleford. It has even been stated that large bodies, presumably those presided over by Big Benn, had invaded the settlement, and that Lieut-Governor Laird’s residence, among others, had been sacked. These statements are not verified but there is reason to believe that Gover- ner Laird is in anything but a safe position. From inquiries made to-day in the Depart- ment of the Interior it is learned that no telegraphic communication has been had with that post since the fourth inst., but official corresgondence has been regularly eceived, and there has been no intimation of an outbreak. The Winnipeg papers state that telegraphic communication with Brattleford is interrupted, but the cause is not known. The Government will prob- ably be in a position early in the week either to confirm or dissipate the rumors which have been current, and which have caused anxiety in many families in the city. Meantime it is believed te be a fact that supplies of money for the purchase of pro- visions have been furnished. id ‘he Prince Imperial’s Death. According to the official account, the Prince Imperial after the surprise of his reconnoitering party rode during the general flight into a ravine where a second body of of Zulu’s were concealed. Independent accounts agree with the story of the manner of the Prince’s death. The body of the Prince, after the funeral parade, at which‘ Lord Chelmsford was chief mourner, was moved to Pietermaritzburg, where it lay in state in the Catholic church. The body will arrive at Durban on the 11th inst., on board the man-of-war Boadieca, for conveyance to Simons Bay, where it will be transferred to the troopship Orontes for transportation to England. ee A I The Lieutenant Govern orship. TEMPERANCE PIC-NIC, The Sons of Temperance Pic-nic yester- day, at West River, was a most enjoyable affair. The members of St. Catherine’s Division with flying colors started in pro- cession in waggons, at 10 o’clock for Rocky Point. The pic-nic was held on the beauti- ful grounds of Michael King. The table cloth was spread on the grass and cevered with the choicest delicacies, which were duly appreciated. After the foot races, and the ether amusements were over, the com- pany approached the grand stand, where short spicy addresses were given by J. J. Chappelle, P. G. W. P., arid J. ©. Me- Kenzie, D. G. W. P. The members of the Order then sung Hold the Fert, after which three cheers were given for St. Catherine’s Division, three for the ladies, and three rousing cheers for the Queen. HEAD ST. PETER’S BAY. The Tea Party at Head St. Peter’s Bay, yesterday, was attended by over three thousand persons. A train of sixteen cars, containing about seven hundred persons, left this city for the grounds. They were well received at Si. Peter’s, and dined at a very choice table. They report a lack in the althletic part of the programme ; but, nevertheless, passed a pleasant day, and re- turned to the city at 8 o’clock p. m. EXCURSION TO ORWELL. Tae B. C. L.0ss about: $6,000. i TH1s morning the beautiful residence and outbuildings of Mr. Henry Palmer, on Kent street, were totally destroyed by fire. Atthree o’clock, a. m., the fire was discov- ered as it originated in the ash room 1m the rear of Mr. Palmer’s kitchen. It had been burning for some time previeusly and when discovered the flames possessed the apartments. ‘Big Donald’ sounded the alarin and Rollo and Silsby Steam Engines hurried to the scene. ‘The first named engine drew water from the tank at the North Side of Queen Square, and the second from the tank on Grafton Street, near Dawson’s Tannery premises, While they were pre- for eperation the flames crept ashroom to a work- shop adjoining. The engines prevent- ed their further spreading. An_half- hour’s good playing brought the fire fully under control ; and at 4 o'clock the dwell- ing heuse and stables were pronounced out of danger. Unfortunately, at this hour, both tanks ran dry and the engines were removed tothe most convenient water— Government Pond. It was impossible for one eriyine to throw water with any effect at such a great distance. Therefore, a puncheon was placed midways ; Silsby took a position at the pond and pumped into the puncheon, and Rollo took a position at that temporary tank, and from it threw an effective stream. While the engines were thus being removed, the flames increased, spread to the kitchen, and from kitchen to the dwelling. The rapidity of the ascent to the roof of the dwelling was most paring rapidly from the surprising. But a few minutes had elapsed from the time the kitchen caught until the roof was seen in ablaze. The fire had now communication with the interior of the building, and all chances of saving it were dispaired of. The stables at the east side of the dwelling also took fire. All burned fiercely. The Hook and Ladder Co. levelled the barn at the east side, and thus stepped the further spread of the flames in thatdirection. Aifive o'clock the buildings were almost levelled to the ground and all fears of the fire spread- ing to the surrounding dwellings had sub- sided. Much credit is due the fire brigade for their service in preventing the flames frem spreading to the premises adjoining Mr. Palmer’s. Had the weather not being extraordinarly calm, they ,would have been unable to work so successfully, and we would have to chronicle a much greater eonflagration. Mr. Palmer's loss is es- timated at $6,000—none of the buildings destroyed being insured. ANOTHER FIRE. At 11 o’clock to-day a barn owned by Mr. Palmer was destroyed by fire. It was sit- uated on Fizroy street, in the rear of the premises burned this morning. This fire is reported to have been the work of an in- cendiary. There was no inflammable mat- erial about it ; nor had any of Mr. Palmer’s servants been in it for. some days. AN ALARM. At noon, a spark from the barn destroy- ed on Fitzroy Street ignited the reof of a barn in the rear of Mrs. Allan’s premises, on Queen Sireet. A hole was burned in the roof and a quantity of straw took fire. Very serious damage would haye ensued were it not for the prompt action of the Hook and Ladder Co. in extinguishing the increasing flames with water from their buckets. A SCENE was created at a faueral in Londoa Ont,, notlong since, by the sexton refusing te {i!] up the grave before he was paid. The father of the deceased not having his purse with him was compelled to borrow the money from friend. - 9 Pe Special Notices. _ B. BaLpeERstoy has the cheapest.
