[ paint men’s noses red, Give them a ruddy glow ; Their pockets by me are bled, Ha, ha, don’t I hook though ! { make men stagger, run ; [ maxe men stutter, hic, How he longs for my rum ; Come, go get it, do quick. t make men steal, lie, swear, In it there is no sin, Religion I can’t bear, Oh, yes, it is too thin. I break up the household, Because it is my life ; 1 make man fierce and bold, With the murderous knife. What care I for the crime Which is wrought by my hand, Since I can have a time, With my cup and the man. Them temperance folks see, They try to put me down ; But ah, some men agree Upon me not to frown. So lovers of all mirth, Come choose me for your king, And put all good from earth, To the cold water ring. il. ‘* Get thee gone” cries temperance, “< Thou art naught but a swell : No more thy tales te enhance, These folks I love so well. No demon like thee can rule, These people of free might, This nation of freedom’s school, While they know what is right. religion true is our staff, Upon it we depend, Tt tells the wheat from chaff, The right it will defend. Cold water, cold water cry, From the north, south, east and west Put liquors and cider by, Then this gay land will be blest.” >_eooe-> Household Hints. fo Derive Away Insects.—Scatter dry, powdered borax for all kinds of in- sects. [ have proved this by years of experience. SaLeratus.— The free use of this ar- ticle in domestic cooking is extremely injurious ; it cases great muscular pros- tration when taken into the stomach. It is poison to the alimementary canal, causing great irritation to the passage. Hovst Piranrs—M*x a few ta'le spoontuls of charcoal with the earth io your flower-pots, and you will be sur prised at the invigorating effects upon the choice and delicate plants. The colour of the flower is greatly increased in richness by the use of charcoal. Soup.—Take about four pounds of good, lean meat, and boil in about four quarts of water; pare about six small onions, and the same quantity of celery, cut in pieces an inch long; one yellow turnip, cut in small pieces, and the same quantity of potatoes; boil in a separate saucepan until half done, as that rids the vegetable of part of the unplesant smell ; when the meat is tender remove it from the broth, and add the vegetables—not the water they were bviled in; then beat well one egg and one tablespoonful of milk, thicken with prepared flour; drop in in small quantities to soak; the soup is ready to be taken up, as it must not boil more than five minutes, or it wall be too thick; if the meat is allowed to remain in the soup after it is tender the soup will be full of fragments of it. This soup is excellent, and as good next day. A Mertruop or CooKINa or OLD Fow.s nor Fir ror Roastine.—Let the birds be kept as long as possible huaog up as long as possible huog up where there is a free circulation of air; and, when picked and prepared for dressing, cover the bottom of a saucepan with slices of good fresh English bacon, upon upon which lay the bird, then add a pint of good, strong, well-seasoned gravy; place the saucepan upon a slow fire, the cover being on, and let the contents sim- mer for an hour and a half or two hours, turning the bird occasionally and supply- ing more gravy, if necessary ; when done, let the contents be put away in a dish to cool. Birds dressed in this manner «.¢ good hot, but they are far better cvid. For preparing poultry for the table M. Soyer invented a plan, by cutting the sinews of a {bird it not only appears plumper and fulier when cooked, as the heat is liable to contract the sinews, but it also affords facilities for carviag when the sinews are divided ; they are trussed in the usual way, only using strings in- stead of skewers. > ++ >. ‘* Fred” said a young man the other day after listening to his wonderful story, ‘‘ do rou mnow.why you are like a harp struck by ‘6 No,” eaid Fred. és I give it up.” . | PREPARE FOR WINTER | — eee ae Os ea 300K & JOB PRINTING! neatly and expeditiously executed, AT THE “EXAMINER” OFFICE under the careful supervision of J. Oct. 5, 1878 —3m law FS % SESH The Greatest Medical Diseovery since the Creation of Man, or since the Commencement of the Christian Era, There never has been a time when the heal- ing of so many different diseases has Deen caused by outward application as the present. It is an undisputed fact that over half of the entire population of the globe resort to the use of ordinary plasters. Dr. MELVIN’S CarsicuM POROUS PLASTERS are acknowledged by all who have used them, to act quicker than any other plaster they ever before tried, and that one of these plasters will do more real service than a hundred of the ordinary kind. All other plasiers are slow of action, and require to be worn continually to effect acure; but with these it is entirely dif- ferent: the ‘nstant one is applied the patient will feel its effect. Physiciansin all ages have thoroughly tested and well know the effect of Capsicum; and it has always been more or less used as a medical agent for an outward application; but it is only of very recent date that its advan- tages in a porous plaster have been discovered. Being, however, convinced of the wonderful enres effected by Dr. MELVIN’S CAPSICUM Porous PLAsTeRs, and their superiority over all other plasters, they now actually prescribo them, in their practice, for such diseases as rheumatism, pain in the side and back, and all such cases as have required the use of plasters or liniment. After you have tried other plas- ters and liniments, and they have failed, and you want acortain cure, ask your druggist for R. MELVIN’s CAPsicuUM POROUS PLASTER. You ean hardly believe ne convictions of its wonderful effects. Although powerful and quick in its action, you can rely on its safety for the most delicate person to wear, as it is free from lead and other poisonous material commonly used in the manufacture ef ordin- ary plasters. One trial is a sufficient guarantee of its merits, and one plaster will soli hundreds to your friends. Ask your druggist for Dr. MeLvin’s CAPstI- cum Porous PLAsTER, and take no other; or, on receipt of 25 cents for one, $1 for five, or $2 for a dozen, ere be mailed, post paid, to any address in the United States or Canadas.
