have gone mosc sweepingly Liberal than

There were still other elements, among
which were naturally the mei-its and
deinerite respectively of the Government
and the Opposition. There is a. popular
impression that the Premier is energetic,
closely attentive tothe public business, to
which he gives a great dculof time _with
outsalury, and that he sincerely ilesires
to be economical. The Ministerial party
presented to the country the stronger
array of men known to the entire Island.

ergetic than the Premier, _and not so well

decadence ofthe Goveriiinent, which
dated from the mistaken adoption of the
License Law for Charlottetown. The
losses of a. number of by~elections followed
in quick succession thereafter, showing
that the resentment of thc temperance
community had been aroused. Aquick
change of front and the adoption of a
l prohibitory law no :loubt helped greatly
to avert the disaster, as the big majority
by which Dr. Douglas was returned at a
subsequent by-election showed quite
clearly. Beyond' question this change of
front on the teniperance question had its
,elfect on the general elections just passed,
for although the course of the Government
in regard to the enforcement of the Scott
Act has been far from satisfactory, it
