THE HILDLIFE CORNER by Dan McAskill With the approach of the busy fall season it is again nearing the time to get ready for winter bird feeding. Planning has begun for the Island Nature Trust's seed sale so you will again be afforded the opportunity to feed our feathered friends while supporting natural areas conservation. One of the things you may wish to start considering is the contruction of a new feeder. The design shown below has proven to be quite successful for those who have used it. p. Simple 15hdfbeder The placement of a few well branched conifer trees on the upwind side of you feeder will help to provide cover areas for birds should a hawk or cat attack. Ensure that they are well anchored to a post, that the bottom branches are pruned off, and that the trees are out of the leaping distance of cats from the feeder. An alternative to anchoring the tree to a post is to insert it into a hole and allow it to freeze in place. If you already have a feeder and wish to contribute your sightings so that they can be used to help monitor bird population trends refer to the Long Point Bird Observatory News article on page 5 of this newsletter. Be sure to pass any unusual bird or animal sightings along to Dan McAskill, 569-4351 or mail them to him at Charlottetown RR # 5, Donagh, P.E.I. ClA 7J8. _ 9 -
