It is new g ally known and admitted that our fisheries have always proved a creat source wea'th to our American neighbours, and this knowled re is at learth leading to the b that they have b too much negiected and a desire is now pretty generally fe ; th m a fair trial. wre can be no doubt that by doing so we would be conferrmy a great benefit on the Is land gene ally. The fisheries are the only ce we now have to fall back upon, Our tims trade is ne arly done: the buildin + ot la “re vess ls must 80 if ow, Our best lands ure all taken up and settled, and it is absolutely necessary for us to start some other branch of | business which will keep he trade of the Co leony ina healthy state. It is, therefore, the duty of the Government to take the matter into their serious consideration, and to offer such inducements as will encceurare our fellow Co l ts to embark at once in the fis ery. In March next the R procity Tr aty will t tinate; and, J id sing from Mr. MeCulloch’s t to Convress, there can be no doubt that will not be renewed. The Americans will continue to fish in our waters, and will carry t! fish home free of du while we will be excluded from their market, except we pay the enormous d ity oul lish wil! then be subject to.
