The Heavens in November. ——— On the Ist of November’ the planet Saturn will be in epposition to the sun, rising just asthe eun sete. Frem the present until Saturn is considerably past eppesition, epportunity for obser- vation will be excellent, provided their is a reasonable amount ef pleasent weather. The beautiful rings are new well spread out, the main division in them beiog visible with quite small tanelceaes. During eppositionin the autumn ef 1878, Saturn appeared like a giebe impaled on a glowing red, the rings were so much foreshertened. For three years the position ‘of planet with respect to the earth has been slowly ehanging, se the wenderful ring system is now visible in all its beauty. On the 6th ef November THE PLANET JUPITER, which new shines just beneath the Pleiades willbe in opposition. Dur- ing oppositiea Jupiter will show te great advantage his mmmense globe. The creat red spot is inits aecustemed place, and the wonderful belt system is very finely planted on the great disc Jupiter is now se near that his meons appear like considerable planets, as they are. It is believed that they may be inhabited. They appear quite large when in transit seross the planets dise. Oa the 7th ef Newember CHE PLANSBT MERCURY will make a transit ef the sun’s dise. The phenomenon will not be visible here. The progress ef the planet ean he seen at Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati a little befere sunset. At Denver, Colorade, ingress will take On the Pacific place at 3.16 p.m be seca to excel- | ceast the transit will lent advantage. THE PLANET MARB. now rapidly approaching the twe principal stars in the constellation of Gemini, is becoming a brilliant ebject in the late erening. Mars is approach- ing eppesition for the second time since the diseovery ef bis moons by Prefesser Asaph Mall, in 1877. The planet will be stationary en the 17th of November, and in oppesition on the 27 ef December. The planet is now an interesting ebjeet in the telescope, The gibbous phase is presented, aad there is the appearance of a snew cap abeut the nerth pole. The disc presents curious markings ef a green celer. The eut. lives of these ynarkings change from day to day, asthe planet revolves on its axis. The pessessors of large tele- | scopes will again look for the day moons. It is probable that they may be seen by the middle of Nevember, with goed instruments. THE CONSTELLATIONS will present a grand epectasle in Ne- vember. The winter constallation will have assumed fullsway. Great Orion will rise betimes aad display his glories during the entire night. Observers ef the heavens always await his comiag with pleasurable anticipatiens. His wonders are a life study. The constele latiom contains a first magnitude vari-| able in Betelgeuse, and aa intensely | burning sun in Rigel, a vast accumu- latien of werld stuif in the great nebula, and wenderfal aebulus stars. The con- stellation is also remarkabie fer the number of its double stars.— Ez. ~~ —- Society Birectory, Charlottetown.
