He has too great rprest for their feelings to do that. oys and girls who wish to become true gentiemen'and ladiessoon learn to,regard the feelings of others, and are careful notto wound them. This was once DAL = ! f | sel and example, builds with both but he that gives goed admonition and bad | example, builds with one hand and pulls dewn with the-othe. A good part ot duty'is expressed in| the simple imperative remember. In the hurry of daily life thereare hun dreds of things left undone which ought to be done, and inthe majority of cases it is not wilful which is to ariget!t neglect, beautifully illustrated among a company | hiame. of robust, active boys who were busy in playing base ball. A little lame fellow about twelve years old, pale and sickly, stood leaning on his crutches evidently very sorry that he was not able to take part in the exciting game. Indeed, he seemed to lose sight of the fact how much his infirmity unfitted him to join in the sport of his stout and healthy companions. The beys good naturedly tried to persuade him to stand on one side and Iet another take his place, but they were thoughtful enough to put it ou the ground that they were afraid he might get hurt. “Why, Jimmy,” said one at last, tor getting himself for & moment, “you can'trup, you know.” “Ob. bush‘ answered another, tbe tallest boy of the party. “Never mind: 1'll ran for him, and you can count it for him.” So saying, the noble fellow took his place by Jimmie’s side, saying to the other in alower tone. “If you were like him you wouldn't like to be told of it ailthe time.” Was not hea true gentleman! He knew his little playmate was lame, and rightly jndging that he did not care to be reminded of it, he acted accordingly. His thoughtfulness of the feelings of others is greatly to be commended, and is worthy of imitatiov.—Class mate. As Fast Time. The new National line steamer’s first voyage, says the New York Herald, in which she madethe run from (Qucens- tow harbor to Sandy Hook in a little less than six days and sixteen hoars, is remarkable for a maiden effort. The greatest number of miles traveled in One day is reported to be four hundred and seventy-seven, or an average of pearly twenty miles an hour for the whole day, Considering that this time was made on an initial voyage, when the steamer’s machinery cannot work with entire smoothness, it scems not improbable that she will make the same run with favorable winds in six daya. The attainment of such speed on the ocean in vessels built as solidly as the American and carefully navigated may be made contributory to satisfy. For a steamer capable of making twenty miles an hour may outrun most of the great Atlantic cyclones and thus save her machinery from the intense strain to which it is subjected in aheavy gale. The fast steamers, if properly handled, should be the safest. nn ee They Wanted Him to Resign. “I see your name appended to # letter requesting the pastor of your church to resign.” “Yes; there's a good deal of dissatis- faction with him in the parish.” “And won't he go!” “Not unless he’s put out he says.” “Are you going to put him out!” “We're going to try.” ‘Anything wrong with his doc- trine {—apything tho matter with his gospel pitch ?” othing. It’s all on account of his wife having said that the ladies of the congregation diden't know any more about dressing than a Kickapoo squaw. “And you believe she ever made such a remark ’” “Certainly ; her cook says so!” <> © <A Gems of Thought. All bow to Virtue, away. He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul. The chestnut is for the man who takes its shell off. Disparege and depreciate no one; an insect bas feeling and an atom shadow. Not to believe in others, not to trust in others, is to reduce life to a mean habit. / To be faithful, tokeep faith simply and joyously, is to reach and hold the essential best of life. There are no depths fora brave heart from which hope cannot mount; hops, which outlasts gold and the grave. Credit is like a looking glass, which, when only sullied by a breath, may be wiped clear again, but if once cracked can never be repaired. The esteem of wise and good men is the greatest f al] temporal enccurage- ment to virtue, and it isa mark of «an abandoned spirit to have no regard to rt. He is the richest man whe knows how to draw a bevetit from the labors of the greatest number of men, of men in distant countries and ip past time. Strength must be fonnd in thought, or it will never be foundin words. Big sounding words, with thoughts corree- ponding, are efforts without effect. Any work, no matter how humble, that a man honors by efficieat labor and steady application will be found impor- tent enough to secure respect for him- self and credit to his name. Hie that gives good advice, builds with one hand;he that gives good coun- and then walk “Tf a civil word or two will render a man bappy, saida French king, “he must be a wretch indeed who will hot give them to him.
