Mosher, president of the Canadian Congress of Labor. which has 350,000 members. President Mosher made an ap- peal to bring help to undcr-privii- eged countries as a means of avert- iiig war. "While we must be ready to de- fend ourselves as a nation and to associate, with other nations for this purpose," he said, "defence is primarily a negative tactic. "It (the Congress) has therefore strongly endorsed Canadian partic- ipation in the activities of the Uti- ited Nations and in other interna- tional bodies. "It recognizes that defence prep- arations have a certain deterrent effect. but it is convinced that Canada and the other nations which are comparatively well-to- do ought to give a great deal more attention to efforts to improve con- ditions in the under-privileged na- tions of the world.” "11 war is to be avoided or avert- ed." he added, "the most effective action directed towards this end is to raise the standard of living for the hundreds of millions of dis- possessed peoples in backward na- tiona. "They must be given food and tools and, most of all, hope for the future." Religion And Life Coiit.lnued from page 3 country is called to make to the welfare of the world.
