T_here’s sonic points no intelligent man can overlook in
selecting a Motbr-thei'e’s some cold facts that command
attention In tina first place what do_ you want? Don’t you
want a motor that will be simple, reliable and durable ? Of
neditionary Force wines: we. the
members of the British section of the
New Zealand Expeditionary Force. ar-
rived here on Christmas eve and went
Straight into camp. The British sec-
tion, I should explain, was raised in
London, the members being New Zea-
landers at home on holiday. men fill-
ius Siwatioiukiu the old Country. and
so forth. ln his connection I should
like to emphasize the patriotism of
these New Zealanders who threw up
lucrative .Iobs to roll up and do their
bit for the old flag-and especially
that of some half dozen who crossed
the wide seas- to enlist.
We have men from Canada, the
United States, the Argentine, and
Rhodesia-nieii who sacrificed, or at
least risked all to take their places
in the fighting line, and who certainly
stand to gain little by their present
action. Such is their idea of patriot-
ism. however, and I fancy most of us
will agree it is a good one. We are
now attached to the main New Zea-
land Force. fully equipped in every
way. Our camp lies within sight of
the Pyiamitis; four thousand years
look down on us"-or is It three?
The Australians are camped right
at the foot of the Pyramids, some
eight miles distant from ourselves.
The Colonial troops are as a whole.
a really fine body of men-broad of
shoulder, deep in the chest, and stin-
burned to n rich nut brown. They are
the picture oi’ rude health, and chock`
“ull of animal spirits, which even tht-
cliniate ol' Egypt cannot eliminate.
_ \’l'hile the New Zealaiitlers, how-
ever, are a particularly well behaved
crowd, their brother iii arms from
the island continent are distinctly
"lively"-especially after pay days!
But they do not mind throwing mon-
ey about, and the natives here will
pardon ai 'thing as long as the afore
pockets. so on the whole they pull to-
gether wonderfully well. In fact. the
local merchants and Iiawkers are hav-
ing the time of their lives, and it will
be a`black day for them when the
men from “down under“ receive their
marching orders.
Taking all in all, living is cheap in
this part of Egypt, but you must lie
thoroughly versed in thc art of bar-
gaining as applied by the natives, who
evince a marked partinlity for long
profits plus cash tmnsuctioiis. The
plastre (worth 2 1-2d.) if-i the basis of
tho Egyptian coinage and the metric
system is in vogue. For nine piastres
one can obtain a really well-served
five course dinner, wine of good qual-
ity being proportionately cheap. As
for cigars and cigarettes they are ri-
diculously cheap, especially tlie local
brands. The same may be said of fruit,
the average price of oranges being (ld.

We have good postal facilities in
camp, and the Y. M. (T. A. and Am-
erican Mission cater in u first class
manner for 'I‘ommy Atkins in the way
of providing reading and writing tents
for his use. where paper, pens and
iiik are supplied gratis and every
courtesy extended. But 1 think a growl
or two may be pardoned; why should
Tommy Atkins have to pay postage
on every letter that drops in thc box?
True it costs only 1d. for a postcard
and 1 1-2d. for a letter to Eiiglaiitl, but
think of the principle of the thing. We
al-1 unite in styling it unjust-in ’I`.A.'s
language.
Our camping ground is just a sandy
desert, hard to march in, as the foot
sinks ankle deep in the yielding soil
at every step-which sounds like an
Irish hull. At the same time this de-
sert will bloom like ti. garden once the
water is supplied. Irrigation is bound
up in the future of Egypt; irrigate the

land and it will grow anything.
