The President remains steadfast in his covvictione as to what is his duty ; and all the adverse criticism, which it is asset- ed is mainly due to misinformation as to the situation or ignorance of the Presi- dent’s purpose, will not be permitted to swerve him in the least degree from the course he has planned. Loypoy, March 30.—Warlike prepara- tions continue here, Considerable importance is attached to the speech of Lord Selborne, Under Secre- tary of State for the Colunies, in this city, yesterday. He declared that there was no more humiliation for England in failing to exclude Russia from the Manchuria than there would be for Russia in failing to excluding England from Khartoum. Eng- land has lost nothing in Chiva which ought to have been kept. The policy of an open door is intact. The Yukon Deal in the Senate _ : ”- ee TRLRGRAPHIC, ‘A BRILLIANT MAN@UVRF. ce ee Capture of Shendy on the Nile, Dervishes Cut Of From Their Base of pupply. Cairo, March 30.—Shendy, on the Nile, was taken by surprise. A gunboat witha battalion of ‘Egyptians on board’ascended the Nile fromthe mcuth of the Atlara river and arrived at Shendy by dawn on Saturdsy. The gunboat shelled the forts and then a battalion was lJanaded and at- tacked the town. The capture of Shendy was a brilliant manoeuvre as the main body of the Dervishes who had advanced against the Anglo~Egvptian forces from Shendy is now cut off from its base of supply and its reserve depot is destroyed. Loxp w March 28.—When events in the far east began to assume @ serious aspect, the British foreign offize made the un- pleasant discovery that its despatches were being tampered with. It became necessary to discard the old cipher, and devise a epecial one, Loxpon March 29.—The Daily Chron- icle says : “* We have reason to believe an area of 10,000 square miles ia the province Shan-Si has been conceded to a syndi- cate of English capitalists. If this is true, it is obvious that Lord Salisbury has ap proved the scheme. ” Lonpon, March 28.—In the honse of commons to-day A. J. Balfour, first lord of the treasury, government lead- er, and acting minister for foreign affairs, replying to Sir William Vernon Harcourt, the liberal leader in the house, promised a ministerial statement on the eituation in the far east before Easter. The Globe (conservative) saye this afternoon: “The disappointment of the government supporters in the progress of affairs in the far east, is becoming more acute. Unless it is found that the government has secured some tangible ad- van‘age, riot will eet in among its suppor- ters. It is reported, however, from the best quarters that the best apparent diplo~ matic defeat of Great Britain makes a move of great importance, which will give Great Britain a favorable position.” —_————--+——_. ——— MR. LARGE HEARD FROM. Sir,—To avoid misunderstanding let me atate that I was enameling bicycles all last summer andjlasi fall and thati "put is a large and modern oyen which, judging by the number of wheels coming in “fills a long-felt want.” But itrequires more than an oven to make a catisfac'oy job I have heard of a handy man putting on. enamel and hanging up the frame for three wecks in bis thop, then baking it, the result being a job 89 rough that the rider would require to bandle his wheels with mits ca to save the skin of his hands. The process I follow is quite ciffierent from the above, ae the g’o 8 and emo xthness of my work will show. H.R Laree. ~~ ESE ee Franchise Bill Read a Second Time.
