Government Wili Not Veto It, Orrawa, April 3. _ The Government has decided not: to interfere .with the legislation of Manituba abolishing the Roman Catholic Seperate Schools and the official use of the French Language in the legislature and courts of that Province. The Manitcba Act contains special provision for the protection of the minority in respect to education. The ques. tion of the constitutionality of the Education Act ia now before the courts, and the future action of the Government may safely be al- lowed to be held in obeyance pending the decision of the courts. It is understood that the Government will defray the cost of litigation regarding dual language. ‘The Minister of Justice expresses doubts as to its constitutionality, but considers the courts the proper place to adjudicate upon that point, ANOTHER STEAMER Between Halifax and Boston, Hautrax, April 7. The Boston, Halifax and P. E. Island Steamship Company has purchased the steamer State of Indiana from the State Line, and will put her on the Line between Halifax and Boston the coming summer. This boat is of iron, 2,684 tons, groas ton- nage, and has guaranteed speed of fourteen knots. She carries four hundred passen- sers. Her advent will make keen com- petition for the Boston trade from Halifax The agreement between this Line and the Canadian Atlantic terminated January first last. Wasuinoton, April 7. The proposed conference of Canadian ministers and Blaine on the subject of re- ciprocity of trade between Canada and the United States, has been postponed for pre- sent. President Hamilton desires to be present when the negotiations are under- taken, and his projected southern and western trip would not admit of this if the negotiations were to proceed at once.
