An Exhibit of Great Interest to
Farmers-
Toronto Sep‘. 7. One of the most inter-
esting exhibits at the Exhibition
grounds for the farmers is that in whit-h
the prccess of manufacture ot binder
twine is shown, that indispensable
article in thtsa days of machinery on
€v<ry welt equipped farm. Although
the twireis so generally in use but
comvarativcly little is known cf its
methods of manufacture and the source
of supply. In the east and cf the Machi-
nery Hall is to be found alot of fine
machinery, which s°eadily, hour after
hour, manipulates the bales of raw
material into binder twine. A Globe
reporter strolling through the building
entered into conversation with Mr. \V.
B. Converse of the Consumers Cordage
Company, Limited, the head office of
which is in Montreal, who is in charge
of the exhibit.
‘-You have a most in'eres ing exhibit
here. Mr. Converse." remarked the
reporter. “Have you any objection to
:tiling for the benefit of Globe readers

equipment of your factory and the
length of time you have beeen in
the business?
‘-Oh" replied Mr. Converse, “our
fimily has been in this bu-iuess for
three generations. We stirted in Mon-
treal in 1525 and originally ovvncd the
Montreal factory. About 1890 the Con-
sumers Cordage Company was formed.
Our firm have mills at Halifax, N. S.,
Montreal,.Duc.,:Port Hope and Brant-
ford in Untario. and St John, N,-B. I
may say that we have sutlicient plant to
supply the entire demand in Canada. At
the present time hinder twine is being
made also a the Kingston and Toronto
prisons, and then there it the Patrons,
or Farmers, Company of Brantfort also
manfacturing.” _

“\Ve employ in our m lls, w hen ruu-
ning, about 1,500 hands,” was the re-

teresting information as to the long dis-
tances which it is brought.
“It comes from all parts of the world
but principally from the Philippine Is-
lands. The best material is Manilla, a
product of the Phtlippine Islands,
which have beenso much talked about
recently. This is the nizverial we use
in the manufacture of binder twipe.
Sisal hemp, which is for pior grades of
twine, comes from Mexico, and there
are also other species of sisal grown in
the Islind of _Mauritius and down at
Tampa, where the United S‘n'_es troops
were encamped before they left for
Cuba. \\'e also get hemp from Russia,
called Russian hemp, Italian hemp from
Italy, New Zealand hemp from New
Zealand, and jute from India. These
are the principal. libres used.”

are manufacturing here under a disad-
vantage. We cannot show half the
processes the material has to go through
and have been co npelled to bring the

to go through a great many machines
before it gets down to the s‘ate in
which you now see it being fed to the

but the best, and we have skilled em-
ployees, who in a great many cases are

“During the last week we have had
over a thousand American farmers
looking at our exhibit, and they have

goods do you find most advantageous ?”
“We have. mills or agents scattered
all over Ontario and the Northwest, and

“Our exhibit here has excited wide-
spread :ind general interest not only
among farmers, but every one who has
evinced grett interest in it. The im-
pression that we had gone out of
the manuficttire of binder twine
arose from the _ fact that early,
this se.'s:in we decided that on ac-
count of the duty being taken off
binder twine and al o because of its
manufac ure in the prisons we would
not make any more. But we received
so many demands for our twine because
our brands ate so well-known to the
farmers ofthe Dominion that we were
forced to start up our mills again and
run them during the season. We sea
now that the Canadian farmers have
been educated up to the knowledge that I
it p iys only to purchase the best gradis
of twine. They have found the twine
spun in the prisons is not only mariufac-
tured from inierifr grades ot hcuip,but
it is also iniziuiacturcd in a \e"y loose
niaaner compiiett wlth the way wc do
it. This arlses from the fit-t that the
prisoners have no interest in their work
:ind do not turn out the same quality of
work as skilled operativcs. As to the
American twine, there has b;eii a. great
deal of it sent in h re, but it has never
given the same satisfaction as the twine
made on the English system.”
