Somewhere in France, Dear Motherz- Your welcome letter dated Feb. 16th. Was glad to hear from home once more and to know that you are all well, as it leaves us. You spoke about sending socks. I re- ceived seven pairs last night from the Red Cross. . They were nice and warm ones just came in time as -it is snowing today. There was no name in them. I thank the kind people of Pownal from the bottom of my heart for their kind- ness towards us boys. .They keep us with plenty of socks I sometimes share with some poor fellow that does not get many. We never have to mend our socks. We have a good bath house and wush our clothes and we can have a bath once in it while. Believe me we enjoy it after a trip in the trenches, so we are not so bad off after all. If you have anything to send send it to John as I have plenty nf* everything but chewing tobacco. Louis gets some once in a while and so does John and I always get my share of It Lewis and John Mcbarren are the best boys I ever met and if I should lose them’ I would be lost. Chester is in England and he is better now. We have very good times'over here. although Frlts makes it rough for us sometimes but we get square with them and more. . We had a rough time a few days ago, and I worked so hard I was all in the next, day but my name was taken by the second in com- mand of the Batt., who was with me and gave me a hand to get the men out. He said he would see that I was rewarded for lt. But I did not do lt for a reward I did it to save life il I could. God only knows how I escaped' as Fritz was putting shells all around us. I only thank God that I am alive The boys all thought I was ,killed when I dldn't show up with the rest of the crew.. When I came ln they ai- most carried me. I did not think I had -courage enough to do what I did. but I thank God that I am alive and well today.. It was the roughest time I have had since I came out while it lasted.
