QUEBEC BEAVERS
CAUHING TROUBLE.
QUEBEC, February 12-Beavers are
becoming troublesome again in Que-
bec. A Government bill read the sec-
oiiii time -at the meetingof thc
House this afternoon concerns the kil-
certaiu conditions. According to law
they are protected till 1912 from
tralvpcrs, but Hon. Mr. Ta.scheree.u,
minister of public works, who had
charge of the bill in the absence of
Hon. Mr. Devlin, informed the mem-
bers that in certain instances beav-
ers were causing coiisiderable damage.
They were damming up rivers, which
caused the country to ho flooded, and
they were also stopping thmflow of
certain streams. They were, in fact,
coming back to their ancient posi-
tion. The bill accordingly authorizes
thc shooting oi these beavers where
it was judged necessary by the Lieut-
enant-Governor-in-Council.
Some amusement was caused in the
House when Hon. Mr. Taschcrenu an-
nounced that the purpose of the bill
was to kill oi a. few “casters/'
which were again becoming a menace
in Quebec.
The Opposition appreciated the
point of the joke and gave the im-
pression that the castors would look
alter themselves.
The same bill likewise authorizes
tlieseiziire of (urs trapped out of
season. These skins are to be sold,
and. if there is anythingleft, the
owners will get it. The bill will per-
mit the entire seizure, even if part
of the skins were killcddegally.
