TO THE MEMORY OF WILLIAM EDMUND DINGWELL. BY A FRIEND. When the drooping leaves that lingered On the mossy grass grown hills, And the bud of the house fiower Bent 2bove the, window sill : When the lovely youth of summer Wooed the breezes wandering by, Then our young friend William Folded his soft wings to die. Twilight had ber curtains gathered, Pinne’ them gently with a star, And the fragrant autumn zephyrs Floated softly from afar. When the snowy lid was lifted From above the dark brown eye, And a woice of music siiv'ry Whispered low a sweet good bye. Tearful eyes were bending o'er him, Lent * love's glories’’ to his own— Gentle voices, sad and mourafal, Answered low hia trembling tone. But the haman frame was ehaken,—~ Sweetly had the spirit fled ; Plumed were his bright wings for heaven, And my sweet young friend was dead. Then with care the dark brown hair Combe: they from his manly brow— Placed his cold, cold hands, and whispered, ‘* William is an angel now.”’ Pressed the last kiss on his forehead, Round |iim wrapped the robe of white, ‘Then combed back his dark brown tresses, Sadly breathed the last good night. | Heaven retaineth now its treasure ; ! Earth the lovely casket keeps ; And the «:inbeams love to linger Where our dearest William sleeps.
