HALIFAX, Oct. 4-The time of the courts of this country has been occu- pied to 3 considerable extent recently by the trial of James Maggs, janitor ol The Herald and Mail plant, who was charged with criminal ‘libel on Dr. A. C. Hawkins alleged to have been published in The Evening Mail. Yesterdev the jury found Mr.Maggs guilty, and the next thing was the sentence of the court. This was pronounced by Mr. .lus- tice Ritchie and was, that James Maggs be sentenced to Fifteen Minu- tes in the county jail.
