Panis, March 29.—An official comuni- cation has just been issued relative to the statement by Mr. Curzon in the British house of commons yesterday. Mr. Carzon made the announcement in regard io the anuuling of existing treaties with Mada- gascar, that it was a subject of extreme importance. When the English govern— ment had received official notice of this action, he said they would take proper steps to protect British interests. The French government in its official note asserts that France cecupies in Mada- gasear a special position and that it is entitled to special treatment in conse— quence. France will accordingly grant to reat Britain in Madagascar the benefit of the must favored nation clause #o far as other nations are concerned, France will not, however, give Great Britain the benefit of the most favored nation clause if it is ir interpreted to mean that Great Britain will be accorded the same commercial rights in Madagascar as are accorded to the French government. France, in other werds, will insist upon being the “most favored nation.” England’s promptness with Germany two months has not been without its effect upon France. Long forbearance on the part of the Mother couutry had de- ceived her neighbors, and none of them more than France. Consequently, when- ever any listle difficulty arose between England and France the people of the latter country began at once to talk “fight.” But they are now disposed to discuss such mattera in better temper. If the Dongola expedition had been resolved up- on before the flying squadron was made up, France would probably have wanted war. = A LESSON IN BUSINESS. oo The Basis on Which the Selling Price is Arrived At. ‘‘Now. my son,’’ said the old merchant, “while you ate applying yourself to the details of this business, learning how to buy and how to sell, how to gauge the taste and need of the great public, how to avoid mistakes, how to seize opportuni- ties—while you study these things keep always before you the fact that the basis of all true business sucoess is absolute, uncompromising honesty.”’ ‘*Pather,’’ said the young man, ‘‘your business has always heen one of large sales and small profits, has it not?’ *“You know what I advertiso, my son; r VRARSQ : I buy everything direct from the mapu- of for ov i EA RS has been facturer, and I sell to the consumer at ex- ming this with great success | actly seven and a half per cent. advance from cost.
