Let the recent incident be remem- bered as an unqualified proof that Prohibition prohibits and that any attempt at repeal would be an at- tempt to move back the hands of the clock. COWARDICE. Cowardice may arise from physical weakness or from some peculiarity of temperament. In such cases it bo- longa_to the category of unavoidable human weaknesses the victim of which is rather to be pitied than blamed. Detestahle as this form of coward- ice is the world is full of it and in the most unsuspected places. We have in recent issues been discussing the relation of the people to the enforce- ment of the Prohibition Act. We are ard and bra¢|art?. But when th'e "dragon" approaches he "crawls under the bed." We are not in this discussing whether a man has the right to pro- ect his business by letting others do what business they please or by trad-i ing with whom he pleases. What we are after is the man who impiously and blasphemously preaches or prays one doctrine while in congenial com- pany and practices an entirely dlfler- ent one in his daily life. An audience in this-Christian land of ours would probably be shocked if a. professedly temperanceiman should announce meekly, “Ladies and gentle- men, I know that liquor is being sold freely ,in this town; I know young men who are being ruined by drink; I know where they buy it for I see them going in day after day. But if I were to give their names to the pro- secutor I would be found out and my business would sufler. So you will kindly excuse me." Such a speech would, at least, have the merit of being honest and the man making it would be no coward but it would meet with a terrible howl from many who, if they spoke truly, would use the same words. “He has the courage of his con- vlctions" is the highest tribute that can be paid to a reformer. The few of whom it can be said are the salt; of the earth. The others are “salt that has lost its savour," if it ever had any, “and is thenceforth good for nothing but to be cast out and trod- den under foot of men.” CHANGE OF CONTRACTORS i.EvIs 'ro MoNo'roN QUEBEC, Feb. 5.-William Daly, of Montreal, has been given the con- tract by M.
