UNITED STATES. DESTRUCTION OF THE NEW YORK QUARAN.- TINE BULLDINGS BY AN INCENDIARY. On Wednesday night last. an armed mob attacked the Quarantive station on Staten Island, and set fire to the build- ings occupied by the sick, destroying the whole of them. The cause Of this act of Vandalism is said to be that the in- habitants of Castleton were afraid of infectious diseases, several cases of yellow fever having recently occurred at the Hospital. The incendiaries, feeling that they had not com- pleted their diabolical work the first night, followed up the destruction of the buildings by another attack ov the following night, and it is a sad commentary on the inefliciency of the Government authorities that no adequate steps were taken to prevent a repet tion of the disgraceful scene, although they were aware that a secoud attack was meditated We copy the following particulars from the Boston Courier of last Saturday, which Says, that since the massacre at Vawnpore we bave had no such specimen of * man’s inhn- wanity to man” as this :— At the first attack of the mob, Dr. Bissell summoned the stevedores and others employed at Quarantine, to make a resistance, but they were soon overpowered, one of their pumber, a Swede, named Hegeman, being shot ia the back and severely wouaded, Dr. Bis-ei had his musket taken from him, and received a beating with the butt end of it. The mob first set fire to a long r w ot wooden shanties, called the swali pox shanties, and then to the Smuail Pox Hospital, a large brick building two stories in height. There were several patients in the shanties, and it was with great difh- morning. While these buildings were burning, the yellow fever shanties, the “Saint Nicholas,” a large three storey brick building, the dexd house and dissection room, the barn, the carriage house, and coal house with 60UU tons of coal, the wagzage house, and several other smaller buildings, were set fire tu, and the next morning all that was left of them was a mass of charred aud smoking ruins. While these buildings were in full blaze, the mob made a rush for the house ot Dr. Thompsou, the Llealth Officer, and set that on fire in five or other liquors whieb they sought and found. The library of the Docior—a valuable coilection of works of medicine, >) ewience and literature—was thrown into the “ames and des- troyed. Mrs. Toompson had been sick for several days, and was removed froim the house in a chair. Tue incendiaries inciude some of the most prominent men of Siapletou, among them a Justice of the Peace, who glories mm the part be tuok. None of them seem to fear the conse- quences Of their participation iu the action. With many it Sapvears that tae desire jor the demolition of the buidines aiuse more fiow the depreciation of their property or a los ty their Dusiuess from the presence of the Quarantine build- ings, than from any dread of the infectious diseases. | to favor our Institute with a lecture which we highly appreci- ated, we respectfully request that you will oblige the members eulty that they were saved by the stevedores, who deposited | them on the grass as far as possible trom the burning build. | ings, and covering them with blankets, left them until sik places, at first making flee ure of' his champague and | New Advertisements, | ht Se ela.
