The Stary says: ‘‘The Consolidated has! has been relieved by other banks of nine out vf its sixteen agencies. ‘‘We understand that heavy demands have been made u the head office to-day and which it was found impossible to meet. We regret therefore to have te say that it is quite probably the bank will net open its deors to-morrow.” On the other hand the stock closed to-day somewhat stronger, selling at 155 which would indicate that such information had not been obtained by brokers, Your correspondent learns to-night that the Consolidated Bank will suspend to- morrow, and that some demands were re- fused this afternoon. This action was pre- cipitated from lack of confidence in the statements of the Directors, arising out of disclosures in Asher’s & Co.’s estate, to the effect that $525,000 was due the bank by that firm and the character of other assets held by the bank. The feeling in business circles is very unsatisfactory. Grimley’s balloon, the ‘‘Canada,” ascend- ed at five o'clock. It was completely filled, centaining 70,000 cubic feet of gas. A very sad accident occurred to-day at Clayton, 12 miles above here. When about a hundred yards out the forward ropes breke, causing the boats to separate, which resuited in the capsizing of the steam yacht ** Josephine,” she being the smaller boat of the two. In the Commons to-day the Chancellor of the Exchequer stated that the Government proposed to ask a vote of £3,000,000 ster’- ing on account of the expenses of the war in South Africa, which sum if not sufficient, would at all events suffice till. the next session of Parliament. The new credit thus asked for will raise the expenditures for the Zulu war to £4,500,000. The Chan- cellor stated that the new credit would transfer thesurplus estimated at the intro- duction of the Budget into a deficit of £1,- 163,000, but the Government hopes to re- cover this sum from the South African Colonies, and would ask authority to raise remainder by Hixchequer bonds. The “Globe” says a letter was lately re- ceived by Horatio N. J. Sprague, United States Consul at Gibraltar, demanding that $2,000 be deposited in a certain spot, on pain ‘of the death of himself and family in the event of his refusal. The Spanish authorities investigated the matter and ar- rested fourteen persons on suspicion. Mr. Sprague has since received a letter con- taining still more audacious threats.
