The Pulpit and the Pew. }etween a minister and his eongre— gation there is an action and a reaction, so that the minister makes the congre— gation and the corgregation makes the minister. When onespeaks of minister’s service to his people one is not think— ing of pew rents and offertories, and stat- istics, and crowds; nor of schools, and guilds, and classes, and lectures. The master achievement of the minister is to form character and to make men. The chief question, therefore, to con- sider about a minister’s work is: What kind of men has he made ? And one, at least, of the most de- cisive questions by which the members of a congregation can be judged is: What have they made of their minister ? By that one does not mean what salary they may give him, how agreeable they may be to him, but how far he has become a man and risen to his height in the atmosphere of his congregation. Some congregations have ruined ministers by harrassing them till they lost heart and self-control and became peevish and ill-tempered, Some con- gregations, again have ruined ministers by so humoring and petting them that they could endure no contradiction, and became childish. That congre— gation has done its duty most effective- ly which has created an atmosphere so genial, and yet so bracing, that every good in its minister has been fostered, and everything petty killed - lan Mac- laren, in the July Ladies’ Home Journal. What is Bigotry. Firmness in your religious convic~ tions is not bigotry. It certainly does’nt follow that because a man loves his own form of faith he must hate and despise all others. On the contrary the chances are that he will be a truly liberal man. A fellow feeling makes us wondrous kind,” and it is on- St. James’ ly the man of strong convictions who can understand and sympathise with | those who while differing from him in the strength with which they hold thera, ; On the other hand me have ed strong convictions on any subject are often themselves very narrow—minded, | ‘n who and intolerant. They cannot under stand men with strong convictions, as } the saying is they have “no use for} them.” ‘The narrowest minded and | most illiberal men I have ever met, | have, some of them, belonged to this | class of so called ‘“‘moderate men.’ They can scarcely say anything too] hard of men of strong cony tions, | To them they are ‘ fanatics,” “extrem- | ists,” firebrands ‘There is o room | and use in the world for wen of | their own type. Bigotry then not | firmness, in matters of principle. It is} stubbornness about trifles,2 lack of} sympathy for what we consider the in- | tellectual errors of our opponents, 2 | tendency to attribute evil motives to those who differ from us, and an in- capacity for distinguishing between systems and individuals, ‘The latter is the real test of man’s bigotry. The bigoted man hates the individual as much as, and often worse than his errors. — Church Work.
