Hicks-Beach has “upparently sanctioned on the part of the Government. Cetewayo’s messen- gers were repulsed, yet Lord Chelms- ford, in his telegram dated May 17th, says that John Dunn, the best authority believed they had with them the ele- phant's tusk, the sign of being in ear- nest; and again, ‘Dunn thinks the King means business.’ The attention of the Government will be called to ano.her ,part of Lord Chelmsford’s despatea, in which John Dann, on his Lordship’s behalf, threatened ail the Zulu chiefs in these words :—‘* They must come in at once, trusting English clermency, and they would not be badly dealt with, but if they stay with the King when I advance all would be de- stroyed.’ Itis thought extraordinary that an English Commander-io-Chief could transmit a message so inconsist- eut with the usages of modern warfare, and so grossly injudicious, as tending to prolong the war to the last extremity by leaving the Zulu chiefs no alterna- tive but unconditional surrender or de- struction.” ——--—— -—- > —w ew s ‘Sir Roger’s” Prison Life. ‘he’ Claimant is at present in her Majesty’s convict prison at Portsmouth where he is employed in stacking tim- ber, in which occupation he is said to be quite at home. He does as much work as any three men in his party, and this not—uas he himself says—from any superior strength that he possess- es, but from a “ knack’ of shifting logs, which he acquired in the backwoods of Australia. By his fellow-prisoeners the Claimant is regarded as “a very good sort,” always ready and willing to lend % hand to a fellowsprisoner. About three years ago he was transferred from Dartmoor to Portsmouth, when he was put in the tailors’ shop to repair prison clothing, but having had a quarrel with one of the men in the shop, he applied to the governor to be put out of it, and was accordingly transferred to the stacking party, where he has remained ever since. At first the “Claimant’s” appearance on public works created considerable excitement crowds flocking to the’prisoner eager to catch a glimpse of him ashe marched to and from labor, but the novelty soon wore away, and he now marches in and out of the prison scarcely noticed. Although his health is good, his prodigious bulk has considerably decreased. He does not weigh more than 15 stone. He is al- lowed extra food to the extent of about one-fourth more than the ordinary al- lowance. Some time ago he petitioned the Secretary of State for some reduc- tion of sentence, when the governor was instructed to inform “ Arthur Or- ton, alias Thomas Castro, alias Roger Tichborne, that there were no grounds, &e.’ This answer the Claimant felt very keenly. Sahn ela Nl treme While the drama of Shakespeare has almost ceased to meet with appreciation in the land of his birth, and among those who speak the language, its popu- larity has been steadily on the increase in Germany. During the theatrical season of 187758, no fewer than 428 representations ot his plays were given throughout the States of the Empire, the large number of 27 plays being given. Winter’s Tale leads the list, with 42 representations ; Hamlet had 40; Midsummer Night’s Dream 38, and Merchant of Venice 37 the best critics of the grea have also been Germans. ———S Liver is King. ‘he liver is the imperial organ of the whole human system, as it controls the life, health and happiness of man. When it is disturbed in its proper action, all kinds of ailiments are the natural result. The di- gestion of food, the movements of the heart anc blood, the action of the brain and ner- vous system, are all immediately connected with the workings of the liver. It has been _successfully proved that Green’s August Flower is unequalled in curjng adl persons afflicted with dyspepsia or iver complaint, anit all the numerous symptoms that result from an unhealthy condition of the liver an stomach. Harprxe, Esq., Brockville, Ont. :— Dear Srr—It is now two years since your ‘‘Censtitutional Catarrh Remedy’ was intro- duced tome. Ihave waited this ong to see if the cure would remain permanent before do- ing this, my duty, to you, as at first the happy effects seemed to me to be “too good eke true,” ’ I was afflicted in my head for years before suspected it to be Catarrh. In reading in your ticulars. The inward ‘‘drop”’ from the head had become very disagreeable, and a choking sensation often preventing me from lying long, I would feel like smothering and be compelled to sit upin the bed. My health and spirits were seriously affected. When your agent came to Walkertown in August, 1876, I secured three bottles. Before I had used a quarter of the contents of one bottle [ found decided re- lief, and when I had used two bottles and a third, I quit taking it, feeling quite cured of that ailment, and have not used any since until of late I have taken some for a cold in my head, A sense of duty to sufferers from that loath- some disease, Catarrh, prompts. me to send ~ this pare, unsolicited, with leave to make what use of it yon ma Yours truly, ?
