Strange to say, one would never conclude from their physiogonomies that they had any extraordinary philosophic acumen. Still, nothing is unknown to them. The English Materialists are known to them. They are familiar with Kant and Hegel, with Schil- ling and Fichte, with Plato and Aristotle, with Emerson and Tom Paine. They may not have acquired marked distinction in their respective trades; they may not al ways be able to pay one hundred cents on the dellar; but they know all things know- able. Is not it a great boast to be living in a cul tured and tolorant city where, whether you can get a good photograph or not, whether you can get a good pair of breeches or not, whether you can get a good brid!e for your horse or not,—you can always meet wih intellectual men who will descant on synthetic philos- opby, on the critic of pure reason, and discuss with the Concord philosophers ‘“‘the thenness of the then, and tle butness of the but.” Of course these literati are themselves toler- ant and cultured. Else how would they reflect such bright corruscations on the town? They would never breathe an unbecoming word of a member—muchb less a clergymau—of any Christian sect. They would disdain to sneer at anybody's conscientious convictions. They use only calm, cool reason, for **they are all— a}1 honorable men.” So the revolution goes on. I thank my stars that I live in this period of transition’ When ever the Presbyterians and Methodists re- model their creeds to suit the new aposties, | will inform you. We expect the Baptists to cave in shortly. Won't it be funny tho’ when we hear the religion of Humanity preached from the pulpits of St. Mary’s and St. Paul's? We will have to get Macaulay s New Zealand- er to Summerside to sketch the ruins not only of St. Paul’s but also of St, Mary’s. According to # recent despatch from Berliu, Herr Boshard, editor of the Gotha}; Gazette, a radical daily, has just been lib- ; erated from Ichtershausen prison, to which he was sentenced for several years because of the ultra democratic articles in his jour- pal. He is now publishing a eeries of rev- elations concerning the abuses practised in the prison, especially towards the political prisoners. The ‘‘cat,” he says, is used daily, despite the fact that flogging has been forbidden in fail German prisons. He saw two men whipped stripped to the waist until blood ran from their backs. The political prisoners received no_ better treatment than the lowest convicts. They got only enough water for drinking. His repeat ed appeals for a bath eventualiy provoked the keeper to such a rage that he threatened Herr Boshard with a flogging in case the latter again mentioned the subject. Herr Boshard went unbathed until the nine months of his sentence expired. He was nct permitted to shave himself, and when his wife sent him his rezor and brush they were seized by the priscn officials. Herr Boshard’s object now is to bring up the subj-ct of prison reform in the Reichstag, and several Radical and Social Democratic Deputies have already promised him to intecpellate the government on the subject during the discussion of the budget of of the Imperial Department of Justice —_—— Syrup of Figs, produced from the laxative and nutritious juice of California figs, combined with the medicinal virtues of plants known to be anniversary. _--- explanation. tion with the Pensma canal question the Old Country returns, have been going steadily up these last three years *s fol There is a rowin St. Paul, M1 ween the Western Union T\ hon iegrn is compounded 2g with +) PURE and WHOLESOME MATERIALS.
