The case was supposed to be one of suicide, but later there were rumors of foul play. This caused the authorities to exhume the body. It was too decomposed, however, for cause of death tu be determined, but evidences of several witnesses caused the jury to re- turn a verdict of wilful murder against persons unknowa. — ed More Licut.—A German iaventor has de- vised a means of producing a light superior in strength to either oi! or electricity. It is by means of air driven through pumicee atone, the latter having been impregnated with benziue. The benzine gas thus ob- tained is then earried through a fine mag- nesium powder, and proceeds upward through a pipe to be consamed in a small flame of a claimed 400,000 candle power. Frick, manager of the Carnegie Steel Company, was shot by Alexander Berkinuar, a New York compositor. Frick was in his private office. Berkinar came in and fired four shots at Frick, two taking effect. Frick will probably recover. Berkinar was arrested. In his mouth were found two cartridges. It is thought that he attempted to commit suicide, but that the cartridges were defective and would not explode. When asked why he - Frick the prisoner said ‘You know why. The steamer Tide took alot of non-union men to Homestead on Saturday. About 500 men are ssid to be working there now. A MONCTON SENSATION, Mysterious Disappearance of an Insurance Man, Moncton, July 25. A sensation has been caused by the mysterious disappearance of Mr. Snow, of this towu; He left Moncton on Thursday aftei:noon to visit the scene of a fire twenty miles back of Hampton in Kiog’s County, upon which destroyed property he held a risk. It was his intention to have returned Friday at noon and to deliver an address at the decoration services in the cemetery. Early on Friday morning he was seen at Hampton, but from that hour to this all traces of him have been lost. It is feared that he is either lost in the woods or that some accident bas occurred to him in the poorly settled part of the country. Aquatic Sport. Wasaineton, July 25. The double-scull race, saturday, by Hanlan and O'Connor, against Ross aad Hosmer, was wen by the former. There were also two single-scull races between O'Connor and Hosmer, and Hanlan and Ross. O'Connor and Hanlan won. Yacht Sunk. Hyannis, Mass., July 25. While at anchor ina fog on Nantucket Shoals yesterday, W. H. Vanderbilt's yacht Alva was run into by a steamer and sunk. Prrrssure, Pa., July 22.-—-A high official of the Carnegie Steel Co, when asked this afternoon by an associated press reporter as to the condition of affairs at Homestead, replied it was very encouraging for the firm. A number of new men have gone to work and some strikers went back to-day. The company has more workmen than it can easily handle. Only good men are engaged. According to this official the 11-9-inch plate mill and the 32 inch slab department are running in full this afternoon. Al] the other branches of the large steel works are being gotten in readiness for resumption at once. The steamer Tide arrived at Home- stead about noon with 52 men, carpenters and mil] workers on board. They made their landing without incident. At Car- negie’s upper and lower union mills there is no change in the situation. At Beaver Falls the shut down is complete. Sr. Jonun's, July 20.—Forest fires are still raging and twenty-one houses were burned at W hitbourne to-day, making thirty-five in all. The inhabitants saved nothing. Father Brown, the Catholic priest, had to remove his furniture. A large lumber mill and the sum- mer resideace of Colonial Secretary Boud are in great danger. The fire near Tops il is still advancing and the town is covered with smoke, Within the city building operations sre progressing on the upper streets, but on Water Street, where absentee landjords own the property, nothing is done, aa they want exorbitant rents. A public meeting will be held to-morrow night to petition the legisla- ture to take action in the matter, as financial rain will result if large mercantile premises cannot be rebuilt.
