Itis believed at Wellington that Mc- Donald and Arsenault will carry the third district of Prince. Al! accounts agree that Mr. McLeod will , be elected in the first district of Queen’s by a good majority, and many persons eetiove | that Mr. Beaton, also, will ride inon the, top of the wave of public indignation with ithe Government. Our advices from Emerald are that “the election of William Campbell is sure.” Mr. Ross, who is opposed to Mr. Bell» is having a hard battle, owing to the strong monetary influence of the latter. But there are good hopes that the independence of intelligent farmers will uvercome this influence. An elector of the district who attended the meeting at Tracadie Head, yesterday | afternoon, reports that Mr. McLean made | « splendid Mr. Peters’ address, he says, fell flat. The Sun, it is plain, says the Montreal Gazette does not understand the United States. Senater Sherman is a politician, accustomed to imputing evil motives to any and every party that ie not with him, and does not distinguish between politics and that ofdiplomacy. He would probab- ly not be greatly off-nded should Lord Salisbury, if snch a thirg were possible, openly say that in its position the United States was dishenest. The game would then be witbin his limits. A PARENT’S HOPE. Hawaiian Commerce During the last Ten Years the Subject of a Circular, Hawaiian Commerce during the last ten years is the subject of a circular just is- sned by the depsrtment of agriculture at Washington. ‘The facts set forth bear directly upon the current discussion of the annexation of the Hawaiian Islands to the Uuited States and are aa follows: “The comparison of the t tistics s-how that the United States controls ninety per cent of the entire trade of the islands.’ The total value of exports and imports of Hawaii for 1896 was $22.578,882. of which about two-thirds, $15,/15,230 was the value of the goods exported. Tue average of ex- ports forthe ten years, I8>7-1r96, was $'1,053,141, and of imports 85.527,459 laaving an average balance of $3,628,031 in favor of »xporis, On thir t athe 91.2 percent was with the Unitea States during the first five yeurs of the decade and in the second tive years this leed of this conatry over other countries was increased to 91 92 per cent. The United States, however, does not yet hold so bigh a poaition in furnishing goods for Hawaii as in taking the products of the islands. Of the average exports for the ten years, nearly eleven million dollars a year, the United States has bought prac- tically all. Ofthe goods purchased by Hawaii on the other hand the United States furnished only about three-fourths However, it ischietly in sales to the islands that the trade is growing. The annual average of these ~<ales for the five years, 1887-1891, was $4,376,312, but for 1891-1896, $5,496,275, wnile the ex- ports to Hawaii for last vear amounted to $5,464,208, nearly a million dolilars more than forany previons year. fhe goods coming from Hawaii to the United States are mainly agricultural pro- duets, while the shipments in tbe other directions, except breadstuffs, are chiefly manufactures. The imports of sugar make tie Jargest item of the trade, while the imports of rice come next. Next in order are the exports of breadstuff , cotton goods, fertilizers, machinery, ijumber, tob-cco, wine and chemicals. Prior to 1876, when the first reciprocity treaty was made between the United States and Hawaii the total commerce averaged only $1,950,°96. Since that date a com- paratively steady growth has brought the total to more than five time t at amount. Figures are furnished for ine next ten mouths of the fi-cal vear 1897, as compared } with the same period in 189». They show large increas in the important items of trade. The other countries whose trade | with Hawii appears to be growing are China and Japan, taken together, and Cauada.” ——— + | LARGE MEETING AT NEW HAVEN. ‘be ball at New Haven was packed last night by an intelligent and orderly audi- , ence and there was almost as many outside unable to get admittance. The speaking was Keptup til almost oae o’c'ock this worning. The peoples’ candidaies have every reason to fee! pleased with the result, Mr. Farquaharson was the first speaker and he oceupied the time for about au hour. His ¢flort was a very labored one and be made ao unusually poor im- pression op the audience. He did’pt even allempt to d-fend the many wrong avings ef the government but satisfied himwseif wit denouncing pievious governments aud blowing about Laurier and Davies. Mr. McMillan followed and astonished his friends with the epirit and eueryy which he threw in‘o bis address. He was most atten:ively listened to. Mr. Wise replied in a good natured way which indicated that even he had lost faith in the government. Mr. Horne came vext with a really goud speech bristling with arguments and facts. Mr. James Mclean m de a short reply. Mr. W.S. Stewart was called upon and r sponded amidst cheers. His speech was a most severe condemnation of the govern- meut, its deception, its extravagance and and its boodling. ‘The charge +gainst the government of naving -quanderea $6,060.- 90 of the pabic mouoey and of having concealed aad covered up the transaction in connection with the building of the Boodler was proved to the satisfaction of every one. Mr. Farquharson and _ his sattelites were thuuderstruck as Mr. Stewart Jaid bare this most indefencible job and exposed the hollow bluff ng of Mr. Farquharsen in connection therewith. Mr. Stewart received a splendii recep- tion in this heretofore stronghold of the enemy and Mr. Farquharson is but too sorry he invited him there. Mr. Scott closed the meeting with a few remarks.
