An interesting article. on shipping at Montague during oct- ober, 1898, was recently displayed at The Guardian oftice. Montague. Taki g from a. half-century-old is- sue or he Guardian. it gives evid- ence of the fact that Montague was at that time a very busy ahip- ping centre. This activity on Mon- tague's water front lasted until the early 1930': when produce be- gan to move by rail. and later by truck. It is estimated that where one ship puts into port in the Spring and Fall now. ten ships ap- peared at the turn of the century. It was -mm"ed that the appoint- incni oi town assessors be left to the discretion of the finance com- mittee. On discussion it was felt that the new assessment should be brought out as soon as the as- sessors had completed their work, and that every attempt should be made in the near fixture to collect as much at the arrears as possi- ble. which at the present time is quite substantial. It was pointed out that the arrears on the sewer payments were coming in. and would be all collected within a short period. l Considerable discussion took place with respect to the hazard- Kous drain below MacDonald Ave- nue. near the Stewart property. it was stated that some accidents had occurred. and that the town would have to fix this section. it was moved that the street com- imilicc look into the mailer. and have the condition rcmcdicd. The prices listed in the above article are considerably lower than today. when oats are 32.50 to 02.75 per 100 lbs.. potatoes 50 cents per 75 lb. sack, and tumipa 45 cents per bushel. , It will be iurther noted that the writer observed the need for more wharf accommodation. At the time there were in existence Ciaul's Wharf which extended from the bridge along the North side or the river almost to the present day Imperial Oil tanks. and the Dewar Wharf which extended further on. On the south side the Lampert Wharf extended from the bridge to the end of the present day Irv- ing oil tanks, and the Stevens Wharf which is the only one of the old wharves still in existence. since then the Poole and Thomp- son wharf has been built on the South side. which. with the Stev- ens Wharr constitute the only pre- sent wharf accommodation. It was stated that during the referred to era it was not uncom- mon to cross the river on the decks of the ships at almost any point in the river as they lay tied to each other awaiting a berth, a scene un. doubtedly never to be witnessed again.
