"The Strongest Memory is IVeaker Than the Weakest Ink.” TUESDAY, nucuiiiisszir. s1, 1946 tlii The Threshold F? There is always something inspiring in the thought of a New Year. However smudged the old pages may be, this is a new leaf to be turn- ed aver, with untold possibilities. The mistakes of the past can, with courage and wisdom, be avoided. However disillusioned we may be, this feeling of hope and confidence revives on the deathbed of every old year, arid it is well that it should be so. We are all, as Stevenson says, "in- defatigable adventurous pioneers." We all ex- pect to come forth some day_on some con- spicuous hill-top, and but a little way further, against the setting sun, descry the spires of EI_ Dorado. Whether we do so or not is of little consequence, "for to travel hopefully is a bet- ter thing than to arrive, and the true success is to labour." ‘ _ _ This applies to national and international affairs, as well as individually. As the year I947 looms on the threshold the thoughts of men are centred, as never before, on building on the ruins of our war-weary, stricken world a. more idealistic and enduring civilization. This new year may be of momentous importance in this connection. Reference was made in these col- umns yesterday to the machinery whereby _the United Nations Organization hopes to achieve tbis objective. Behind the machinery is the purpose expressed in the preamble to the Char- ter of the United Nations, which may bequot- ed as the most timely thought to leave with all our readers on this New Years eve: ‘ "We, the peoples of the United Nations, "determined to save succeeding genera- tions from the scourge of war, which twice ll‘l our lifetime has brought untold 50m"! l° mankind, and _ "to reaffirm faith ll'l fundamental human rights, in the dignity_and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small, 00d _ _ _ "to establish conditions under which Illsh“ and respect for the obligations flllSlng ‘mm treaties and other sources of international law can be maintained, and "to promote socia standards of life in lar "and for these en and live logellilel‘ l" P9" good neighbors.’ This is an am I progress and better ger freedom, ds to practice tolerance e with one another as bitious programrnii, l?" me" i no reason why, under Providence, it caiiiwl b? realized The challenge comes to the leaders of gvery member of the United Nations to work resolutely and steadfastly to this end.
