Daring that time they will be ine'igible to vote or hold otlioe. The law-against corrupt doings in elections have too long been a dead letter on the statue book, except as against the candidates. Candidates are sometimes unseated, other offenders usually go unpunished. The agents and heelers have been allowed to bribe and otherwise violate the law with impun- ity so far as they themselves were concerned, their only care being not to endanger their candidate, or the party in whose interest they were working. Now that a number of active agents in one riding have been pun- ished, the bribers in other constitu encies may take a wholesome warning. The effect of having seventeen men in a single riding with thoir names struck Oli' the voting lists will be a reminder to the public of their grave offence against the law. But why is it that in the face of all the corrup- tion revealed from time to time in the election courts we have not hundreds of like examples made? It has been rarely indeed that the penalties of the law have been enforced against this class cf.oHenders. In this matter there seems to have been a gross neg- lect by those whose duty it is to guard the electoral purity of the country. The political parties are chary of proceeding to the full extent of the law against their opponents-, for the obvious reason that they are 8 P* P U in elections in a single day than themselves equally guilty.
