The Liberal Convention of West Queen's yesterday nominated Hon. D Farquharson by a large majority as the party candidate in the coming by-election. This was looked upon as a foregone conclusion after the result of the e‘ections of delegates in the several polling divisions became known a few days ago. Within that interim, since being assured of the nomination, both Mr. Farquharson and his organ, the Patriot. have endeavored to assume a cancilia tory attitude. This is quiie politic on their part, but the fact remains that the seeds of dissension in the party have been widely sown, and the harvest is yet to come. Down to the date of lirelnouiination made yesterday any qualified person within the party had a clear right io expect fair and equal treatment from the party organ. The Patriot, however acted in the most unfair and ungenerous manner toward Mr. Haszard, and from day to day poured out vituperation upon Mr. Haazard and his friends. The party orgar became the personal organ of one man, and treated Mr. Haszard as if he had no rights that any one was bound to respect. Its spiteful and malignant course cannot be forgotten in a day. All the power of the Local Government, its patronage and influence were thrown into the scale to secure a nomination for Mr. Farquharson.0flic°als,contractbrs,and persons in the employ of the Government and expectants of favor made common cause to obtain control of the meetings at which delegates were chosen, and so to obtain control of the convention itself. With the aid of the Patriot they succeeded in their designs. They have secured the nomination, but in a manner which must greatly detract from its value. The agencies and influences brought to bear were so many and widespread and in many cases of so doubtful a character that the result can hardly accepted as the free expression of the Liberal electorate. We have no desire, however to intefere in the internal economy of either party. We are content that they shall conduct their affairs in their own way, reserving always to ' ourselves the right of independent judgment and a free expression of opinion. Our opinions as to Mr. Haszard’s fitness for the position of representative have been in no way; changed by the decision of the Conyention. His course during the weeks since he entered the field has been manly has commanded the respect even_of those It remains to be seen how far the action ul almost as cheap to send a large lot of grain from this side of the Atlantic to the outline of the facts of the present unanimous request of the students that he allow himself to be nominated to the Lord accepted the nomination i irernedy. _ » A I _ _ __ and straightforward, and has gained for -l l_‘r"f/ ' ' him new fric ndson every side.
