In the words of the verdict. the jurors saw the accident as caus- ed “by the skidding of the auto- mobile of which he (the deceas- ed) was the driver and sole oc- cupant on an icy curve of the highway." The verdict concluded by stat- ing that “no blame can be at- tached to any other person." FIVE WITNESSES Five witnesses were called to give evidence at the inquest. These were: Rev. John M. Sheen, United Church minister at Mount Stewart, who discovered the ac- cident; Dr. George Shepherd, Mount Stewart physician sum- moned to the scene by Rev. Mr. Sheen; Miss Anne Maclnnis, St. Peter’s, whom the deceased had driven home from Morell; earlier the same night; Cst. P.J. Borys of the Charlottetown detatchment of the R.C.M.P., who investigat- ed the accident; and Mr. Walter Brehaut,; Charlottetown service station operator and mechanic who examined the victim’s car the day following the fatality. In addition the Coroner intro- duced in evidence the report of Dr. Eisinger, the acting provinci- al pathologist who performed the post mortem. ~ Police evidence disclosed that the victim’s car had left the high- way 500 feet from the curve, and travelling in the left hand ditch a distance of 39 feet, had struck a rock - faced culvert, and con- tinued along the same ditch anpther 38 feet before finally coming to rest facing Moi-ell — the opposite direction to which it had been itravelling at the time the accident occurred.‘ ICY HIGHWAY Both sides of the highway were covered with ice in the vicinity of the accident with icy patches in the center area Constable Borys stated, adding that the vic- tim’s body was found in a lane leading off the highway at a dis- tance of 24 feet from the wrecked vehicle. The pathologist's report gave the cause of death as a rupture of base of the skull either of which, it noted. was sufficient to have caused the fatality. Members of the jury were: Spurgeon W.
