The self moving carriage is rapidly c-lming to the front, and in N ew York thahcrses are disappearing from the front of the road-waggons as they hive already disappeared from the front of the street.cars. The other d y there was a procession of fifty auco-mobile carriages from Madison Square Gardens to General Grant’s tomb. A greatcompany with millions of capital is now introducing these vehicles into many cities, including the larger Canadian cities. And only a few days ago a gasoline motor carriage made its way over the high- way from Cleveland to New York in four days and a half at a cost of less thin one dollar for gasoline! These indications make it apparent that the self- moving carriage is com- ing in, and with it, as a natural and inevitable consequence, there must some better roads. Indwd the bicycle and the self-moving, rubber-tired car- riage are doing and will do more to further the good. roads movement than all other forces combined. The 'auto' which made the trip from Glsvelmd toNew York, 'ss above' re- tsrrrd to, ran at an a rats of di! llld_l_l;llf an hour, but dhcrethe road wasslhooth and good made thirty miles an hour. Its pneu- matic tires are ive inches in dhmet- erand ive oi an inch thick. We are thus broughtto anerawhere railway speed,as we know it in Prince Ealwardrlsland, is practicable upon 3 the highways of the country, if these ` are once made smooth. The self- moving carriage has the further .ad- vantage that, like the bicycle, it will not cut up a road or make it uneven. Ili requires a smooth roadway, free from rats, sticks, stones or mudholes, and a road once put in order can never be injured by motor carriage trafiic Hence the cost of maintain- ing good .~ ads will be greatly reduc- ed when motor carriages become uni- versal, as they must hereafter be. One of our progressive citizens tells Tnwnannrax that he is resolved to procure a motor carriage at no dis- tant day. The first will not long be permitted to be the only one of its kind, and then a new and powerful impetus will at once be A given to the “Better Roads” movement. The Duke of Argyll, now well be- yond the allotted span of ,life, finds an interest in writing psalms. He has published six volumes since he attain- ed the age of seventy, his seventy sixth birthday being co-incident with the issue of the sixth volume. His son, the Marquis of Lorne, sometime Governor-General of Canada, and still san-in-law to the Queen, also culti- vates the muses. Australia and New Zealand to- gether had, in 1897 public debts ag- gergating $225,000,000. Of this vast sum .£13l,O00,000 had been spent on railways, £3,500,000 on telegraphs and £20,500,000 on water supply and irrigation. Of the remaining £70,000,000 the greater part repre- aents harbors, docks, lighthouses, de- fence and immigration. The railways and telegraphs are almost entirely owned by the provinces, and they pay their working expenses together with over 3 per cent on their cost on an average. The money was first bor- rowed at a higher rate, but can now be obtained for 3 per cent. and this is being substituted for the old rate as :he loans fall due. A splendid outfit ..f railways and telegraphs is thus ,l,;¢,ined_ which is entirely under public control and is practically self- supporting. Public appreciation of Tun GUAR- max' is best shown by a steadily growing subscription list and the manv kind things which our friends ahroiighout the Island and abroad are writing us. These are duly appreci- ated, but modesty will only permit I (Pearderfs Building,Grea.t George St.) ` _ _. and with it comes the king of summer fy f I a .
