Bird FOOTNOTES ON NATURE by John Kleien; Doubleday Publish- ers; 81.89. This book is the greatest bar- gain in reading I know of today. Everyone who has listened to "In- formation. Please." knows who Kieran is. 'llhe blurb states that as a boy he spent his summers on a farm "where he walked a great deal in the woods, observing wild life. The book is a mixture of the out-of-doors mixed with memories of childhood. excerpts from favorite poets and comments on the personalities of the famous people the author has known. It is written in an easy con- versational manner that makes good reading and one is econ carried back to childhood and the important discoveries we made on our own initiative regarding bird life and wild life in general. Kieran'a first find was the fact that the created Flycatcher generally uses a discarded snake skin inibuilding its nest. possibly to scare off in- truders. The voices of Black- Crowned Night Herons scared him as he tented out. and the farmers around called them "quowks." not sure the night roamene belonged to this world. Zllhen there was a family of red foxes that used to squall at night, a sound Kiss-an describes as unearthly. I can re- call several families of red foxes nearby when I was a boy but I nevu hard a fox "squall." Kieran began teaching at a sal- ary of forty dollars a month. He had to teach Nature lessons and resumed his study of bird life. When he found the nest of a Cheat- nut-sided Warbler he felt experi- enced and began taking the child- ren on walks to observe for i.hem- selves. The book rambles on de- lightfully. from his attempt at maple sugar making to his adven- tures with the Astronomer, and every chapter will stand re-reading. The book iureally an acquaintance with Klerarfs charming personal- ity. THE BRIDE OF NEWGATE by John Dickson Carr; Musson, 33.00. Then a mys- terious marriage takes place in a prison dungeon. The bride hopes that the groom will be hanged at the set time in the morning. and complications set in when the gal- lows are cheated. for the bride of the midnight. marriage was a young society heiress and her greatest and colors.
