It is merely a matter of systematic adjustment- Flrst in importance we might con- sider thepiston clearance. Greater clearance than is generally used is necessary to obtain more power. But of course the exact amount of clear- ance depends on the design of the motor and its bore. In any event, the piston above the top ring should not touch the cylinder walls at any point. A second important point is to be sure that each piston is in perfect alignments with its cylinder, as this greatly affects the friction and con- sequently the power output of the motor. The valve ports should be slightly increased, if posible. and thorough- ly freed from all obstructing par- ticles of metal. Big ends should pad perfectly and still be quite free. while the valves should be thoroughly cleaned and polished on their stems and ploished on their stems and the springs tested against each other. Stronger valve springs will in some instances help to increase the power. A larger inducticn pipe and car- buretor" combined with l larger choke tube and main iet will help to increase the power. warn msnatmo NEW ossxars Remember that water will not pass through gasket material, and when flting new gaskets to an engine. holes must be cut for this purpose. quite often a car owner will fit a new gasket and forget to cut the neces- sary water holes. and then wonder what causes all the iz-ouble. A CUTTER PIN HINT - When replacing nuts which are locked by cotter pins it is quite often very difficult to locate the cotter pin hole after the nut has been drawn in- to place. But this difficulty can be easily overcome if the end of the bolt is marked with a chisel to indicate the direction of the hole in the bolt. ‘Then, after the nut is in its proper position the end of the bolt'will read- ily indicate the position of the hole. FINDING ABMATURB TROUBLE; i There are numerous causes for armature trouble and process of eli- mination is about the only way to find exactly where the fault lies. The cause of this is usually a few drops of water in the carburet- or. In most instances the opening of the spray nozzle of the carburetor is not large enough to permit the pas- sage 0i’ one drop of water. This means that the gasoline supply is shut ofl’. causing the engine to balk. After a while the water will be brok- en up. is sucked through, and the trouble disappears until another drop causes a recurrence of the trouble. Or any other piece of foreign substance will produce the same trouble. AN OVEBCl-IARGED BATTERY An overcharged battery usually occurs While touring, or when doing a great amount of day driving. making also be that the generator is not pro- perly adJustod and is charging the battery at an abnormal rate. If this is not corrected or counter-balanced. it will eventually overheat and ruin the battery; A watch should be kept on the battery to avoid his trouble. see if the battery is hot after every drive. or if water has to be added to thecells too frequently. to keep them covered. These are the two indications of over-heating. ' SOLDERING ACID I Soldering acid can be made very easily by any car owner. Fill a glass vessel, such as a tumbler, three- fourths full of muriatic acid, then add pieces of sheet zinc until finally the acid refuses to dis solve any more of the zinc.
