A strength. lysychlne toned up mY _ IT _IS OUT The old cry is raised again of the Hangers attending the undermining of London by a honeycomb of .un- kiergrouud electric railways. which is proceeding space. ' St. Ps.ul’s Cathedral, ths Bank of England and Westminster Abbey are all rolmrt-od in imminent. danger. and this time the alarm appears justified regarding St. Paul’s, notwithstand- ing the denials of the Cathedral au- thorities. Experts remain insistent that the danger 1 HUD serious. The foundations are sinking as the ns- tural and inevitable consequence of the pumping which has accompanied the work of driving the various tun- nels that have been constructed and the others which are still in progress in the immediate vicinity. The experts go still further and say this incessant, tunnelling, which is Pl‘°°°°diug in all parts of Loudon, is ll undermining the metropolis. The Banls of England and several other important buildings have been supported by underpinning from time to time. Since the first of the tun- nellings of the last year or so were undertaken ominous tissures have been discovered in the fabric of St. Paul’s. These are especially notable in the stonework of the southern transept, where one wall in parti- cular has rscsded some inches from the perpendicular. ’1'l:ia.t a far pester danger is im- minent, however, is the deliberate opinion of experts who have conduct.- ed an examination _within the last few days. The cross and ball which surmouut. the dome are now three feet out of the perpendicular. This is the con- clusion arrlvsd at by Mr. Frederick Hovsndsn, secretary of the London Institution, alter spending two years in nndlng a. plumblins among the adjacent buildings in order to gauge the deviation. Mr. Hovenden asserts that if the Nelson column were as much out of tho perpendicular it would soon be hi the street. "and for that matter,-” he adds. "I view with dread the um- uellings which are incessantly going on around it." Oxninous cracks are also appearing in the walls of Westminster Abbey. The authorities are undisgulsedly much concerned about the state of aflairs there and are having an ex- amination made by experts. _Asked how the various borrowings cause these subsidences and conse- lll|°llt danger to London buildings, lfr. Hovendsn replied: "In the case of St. Paul's, which is built upon u foundation of potearth, under whllh is a bed of water bearing gravel and sand, and beneath which again is the Loudon clay, the danger has been caused by the gravel bed sinking, owing to its moisture being with- drawn. "The moisture in the gravel bed has been drawn off by the pumping for the various tunnels which run in the vicinity and also by the percol- ation through the brick work of tho large sewer which runs about thirty yards on the south side of the Cathe- dral."- But all over London, Mr. Hovenden asserts, the water in the gravel bed -on the top of the London clay is being drawn oil. 'his hitherto im- pervious London clay, disturbed by the sinking of shafts and tunnelling, has been rotted, and large quantities of water have fallen from the gravel and sands strata beside the'iron tubes to a lower level. In the *building of these under- Uound lines the pumping has had to be kept up night and day to en- able the work to proceed-uninterrupg. sdly. Lower water courses have been formed in every direction in which the tube railways penetrate, the water linking through the rot- ting clay beside the vertical shafts and running alongside the tubes themselves at a depth of eighty to a hundred feet. At_ one or two points the water dnds an outlet into the porous bed at the bottom of the London clay, and at other points runs into a porous bod underneath tha Thames, 5l\s engineers have tried to seal the tubes to the clay hermetically by numplhs this Portland cement through holes in the iron left. for the purpols. but this has been un- avalling. because tlie cement had to be mixed lo this in ordsr to pump it that it was precipitated and left all the wafsr at the surface. Al a matter of fact, it has been found to be impossible to atop the downward dow of water from the gravel bed, for where ones the maid- en clay is disturbed it 'will nam. moisture as longer, and the tubes have become conduits. London, there- fore, in reality is beingmhasrmlnea in every part. whether near the tubes 0|' hot. for thousands of toss of water which, falling upon tho hong. ern and southern heights, formerly flowed intotths revel bed upon the London clay must dad a lower level, HB4 IN doll( lo every day, with the 'consequence that there was neverso much underpinning of buildings in the metropolis as~is now necessitated in all directions. ‘ The Baal: of lhgland was recently l ._ St. Paul’s Cross, London, Three Feet' From Perpendicular--Cathedral and Other Fam- r ' ous Buildings Show Serious Fissures ` -The Danger Explained by I the Secretary of London Institution. “ i ' ' ' ' ~~--~~--'v -'~'--'-'--~‘ ° °»| °y\';J' _ 3 V' 'Y _ '_'¢".'§/.» (_ l_,_»,_1"'-'.' 1 I -`., 1'rft¢' OF the City Road. erected four years ego. was found to be an inch out of plumb.
