R. Han- na, Division of Illustration Stations. Experimental Farms Service. One of the greatest losses is due to the failure to save the liquid manure which 1r. an important source of nitrogen and potash. In i935, a oompl-slson was made st two Illus- tration Stations in Prince Edward Island, with liquid manure and chemical fertlllurs on the growth of timothy hay. Practically the same amounts 0i’ nitrogen arid pot- ash were supplied by the sulphate of ammonia and murlate of potash application as were contained in the liquid manure. The yields from these plots were approximately equal, the liquid manure giving a slightly higher yield. This would indicate that the value of the fertilizing ingredients in liquid manure would be similar to that of the chemical fertilizers and every care should be taken to conserve this important source oi plant nutrients. Other losses oi fertilizing inmd- ients are from leaching end ier- mentation. Leaching is the result of the drainage from the manure pile carrying off the soluble ele- ments of plant food. Fermentation causes serious losses oi nitrogen by the escape of ammonia. Deprecia- tion due to these two factors often amounts to nearly half tine original value of the manure Ila-Rife ll l8 finally incorporated with the Boil. To prevent the loss of liquid ma- nure. the floor and gutter of the stable should be t'B’ht enoush W prevent seepage. Plenty 0t straw spread In the stalls and gutter will absorb the liquid. The manure should, if possible, be piled in a shed where it will not be elmoocd to the heavy rains. If this is not possible. there should be an 1x119912- ious bottom provided for the ma- nure to cut down the amount of seepage and the loss of soluble ln- grecllenta by leaching, More straw in the manure will reduce the amount of leaching by rain and drainage water. Because of its loose. open tex- ture. there in a FEM" 1°" 1mm fermentation in hcrae manure than in cow manure. Mixing these ma- riures uniformly and keeping the manure heap comrpact and same- what moist retards the iennento- tion pluses. sulperphceuhric M’ peat mixed manure will reduce the amount of nitrogen that escapes as ammonia gas. If care has been taken to con- serve the urine, there will be a fairly good content of nitrogen and pota=h in the manure, but phos- phorous rcct this condition. superphoslphate is sometimes mixed with the ma- nure or put on the land as a sup- plcment to manure. Prom 300 w 50o pounds per acre along with 10 tons of manure make fairly well- balnncea fertilizer. ‘llheee con- ducted on various Illustration Sta- tions in Eastern Canada to deter- mine the most suitable aipptlcatons of manure and commercial fertil- izers showed that the lighter alp- pllcatlons of B tons of manure used with 600 lo 900 pounds of a com- Q-yQ-Q-yQQ-QQQ-Q-QDIQIP.
