Organization of the Show With great energy and enthusiasm the nevily appointed board entered upon their duties. The, proposition was a big one. Suitable accommoda- ‘ tion had to be secured, there was no money in the treasury, expenses would be large. and there was much detail work in connecton with the estab- lishment of the show that had to be cared for. There were many obstacles to surmount. Bach, problem, however. was courageously tackled. 'I‘h_e Pro- vincial Agricultural Exhibition . As- sociation was approached with refer- ence to accommodation. and the spacious exhibition buildings were im- mediately granted by the directors. The Canadian National Fox Breeders‘ Association sanctioned the grant 01' $1,000 for a regional show, while the Provincial Government donated the sum of $2.509 for the purchase of h! pens for exhibition. 1n addition, the ominous man o! the province enthus- iastically supported the proboelllon by generously contributing advertising in m, pglgs 11st, and In‘ many other ways the association in its work. Many ‘ dsome trophies have ‘been donated m the championshlD classes. while a wide range of M1185- ribbons and banners provide splendid encouragement to ihe 111161161118 showman. A GREATEVENT , nvrggc HISTORY 110 question that. this outstanding fea- _‘I‘he prize list. 5.000 copies of which have been distributed, provides for six rnain classes of six sections each, and 10 championships. The classes include extra dark, dark silver, dark medium sliver. medium silver, pale sliver, extra pale silver and groups. This range of classes should accom- modate all prospective exhibitors. The competition is open to all Canadian National and American National re- ~gis1ered foxes. Benefits Small Exhibl lor- While it is not anticipated that a, large entry of foxes will be Mured outside or the Maritime field, any de- ficiency in this respect should be more than made upby the patronage or Maritime breeders. Heretofore the small exhibitor, owing to the cost in- volved, and other obstacles, has not been able to show his foxes at the Royal and other shows. The proposed fixture at Charlottetown will provide an opportunity to both the large and small breeder to meet on an equal footing on home grounds at a com- paratively low cost. ‘The small breed- er again need not feel afraid of his larger competitor. Very often foxes of wonderful quality are found among the small groups in the little farm ranch. There is no assurance that the large breeder is going to carry away all ihe championships or grand cham- pionships of tho exhibition. Further- more the feature is to the local breed- er, the home show, which promotes in- terest, and develops loyalty. These factors, it is believed,» will be respon- sible for a very large competition of super-line foxes. ' Recognizing the importance of the Fox Show The Guardian publishes herewith special feature pages which should prove of interest to all oon- cerned in the industry. Attention is directed to the advertisements of prominent breeders, manufacturers and dealers in fox ranching supplies, etc, appearing in this and in two following issues in conjuncton with the fox exhibition news. They make interesting and profitable reading, and serve to show the great import- ance which the husiness has attained in the industrial life of the Province. Prince Edward nuns. iiliiil STANDARD ISMAINTAINEB iTBRiliiRiNtH A Guardian representative had the pleasure recently of visiting the splendidly equipped fox ranch of Mr. E. R. Brow, which is ideally situated about two and a half miles" from Charlottetown on the ‘st. Peter's Road. The ranch, which was acquired by m. Brow in 191s, is plentifully wood- ed, providing the right amount of summer shade for the animals. Its easy accessibility to the city enables its owner to pay frequent visits tothe ranch; and it is this personal super- vision. together with a fixed policy of careful selection for breeding and scientinc dieting and housing meth- ods. that have made for Mr. Brown foxes an enviable reputation when sold either as breeders or for their pelts. He has successfully shipped foxes to many parts of the United States, to Norway, England and other countries. Among his customers he has retained the patronage of one family of fox breeders, live brothers who, for the past six years, have purchased yearly. which is in itself a proof of the quality standard rig- idly malntained at the Brow ranch. One breeder this year secured from two dogs purchased from Mr. Brow twenty-nine living pups. and many -v breeders have been agreeably sur- prised at the records achieved by male animals purchased from this ranch. Mr. Brow. who has associated with him in business his son. has now IOrW-One breeding pens, and some thirty-six smaller ones. containing 160 foxes and pups. Three more breeding pens were added to the, ranch during the past year. In ad- y dition to the breeding pensthere r. ‘ a large run. one hundred and eighty by sixty feet. where eighteen silver tipped beauties from last yea-fa lil- ters run at large and are getting a gloss on their coats which will mean prime marketable pelts by and by. .It was to the uniformly superior. quality and appearance of the young foxes in the smaller pens, however, that the reporter's attention was chiefly drawn. ‘rhese were all sil- ver black foxes of the purest Dalton- | Oulton strain. and were {risking about in the liveliest manner. The visit was rnade Just at feeding time, and the hullahaloo which the pups raised for their supper showed that they were healthy as well as high- spirited. Mr. Brow explained that | when the pups are four weeks old they are weaned and put in the smaller pens which are. elevated about ten inches from the ground on a. flooring of inch mesh wire through which the litter falls to the ground below and is carefully gathered and removed every week. thus making for thorough cleanliness in the pens.
