A striking instance of womans courage and presence of mind oceurred in Philadel- pis recently. A lady residing in that city retired to her room as usual the other night, after having locked the front door of the house and placed the key on the bureau in her bedroom, as was her invari- able custom. She wasstanding before a mirror pre paring for bed, when she saw reflected in it the form of a man crouching under the bed. She was alone in the house, and was naturally terribly startled, but her presence of mind did not desert her. She reasoned that if she cried out or gave the slightest sign that she was aware of the intruder’s presence in the house he would overpower her before help could come, and with a wonderful self-control she went quietly on with her toilet, giving no outward indica- tion of the terrible mental turture she was suffering. The door key on the bureau suggested an idea to her. She picked it up and walked } over to the window, which was open, and} without showing any signs of alarm sat there looking out until help should arrive. Fortunately she did not have long to wait, or she could not have endured the strain. A policeman walked slowly by the house, and without attracting the attention of the man under the bed she dropped the key directly in front of him, and signed to him to unlock the door and come up. He did so, and pulled a burly and brutal luoking negro from under the bed. It was not until he had been taken away and all danger was over that the reaction came, but the tremendous and long-continued strain on her nervous system proved too much for her, and she was completely pros- trated by her adventure. Oe The Best Time for a Girl to Marry. Probably the best time for the average civilized woman to marry would be any age between 24 and 36. It1s not said that no woman should marry earlier or later than either of these ages ; but youth and health and vigor are ordinarily at their highest perfection between these two periods. Very early marriages are seldom desirable for girls, and that for many reasons. The brain is immature, the reason is feeble, and the character is unformed. The consider- ations which would prompt a girl to marry at 17 would in many cases have very little weight with her at 24. At 17 sheisa child, at 24a woman. Where a girl has in- telligent parents, the seven years between 17 and 24 are the period when both mind and body are most amenable to wise dis- cipline, and best repay the thought and toil devoted to their development. Before 17 few girls have learnt to understand what life is, what discipline is, what duty is. They cannot value what is best, either in the father’s wisdom or in the mother’s tenderness. When married at that childish period they are like young recruits taken fresh from the farm and the workshop, and hurried off to a long campaign without any period of preliminary drill and train- ing; or like a schoolboy removed from schuol to acuracy without being sent to the university or to a theological hall. Who can help grieving over a_ child-wife, especially it she have children, and a hus- band who is an inexperienced, and, possib- ly, exacting boy-man? The ardor of his love soon cools; the visionary bliss of her poetical imagination vanishes like the summer mist; there is nothing left but disappointment and wonder that what promised to be so beautiful and long a day should have clouded over almost before sun- rise. — Hospital. i -e e A Skeleton Found. Thirty-five years ago Thos. Gorman, foreman of the’ late Nicholas Sparks, lumberman, Ottawa, ‘réceived a large sum of money with which to pay hands, and disappeared mysteriously, without settling with them. He was last seen going into the house of one Matthew Collins, a car- penter, and about a year after the dis- appearance of Gorman, Collins sold his property and Jeft for the United States. There Collins was sentenced to several years in the penitentiary, but before~ his term of imprisonment expired he died, first confessing that he had murdered a man in Canada for his money. These facts are re- called by the turning up of a large hearth stone by a farmer's plough on the site of Collins’ residence in the township March and the finding of a skeleton beneath it. The belief is that Gorman met his death at the hands of Collins and that this is his skeleton. Odds and Ends. It appears from the society columns of a St. Louis morning paper that ‘a popular young lady” is going to “visit her kins- lady.” An idea of the hardness of the times in Persia may be gained from the fact that men who had a dozen wives have had to reduce the number of three or four.
